Derek Lovitch, of Freeport Wild Bird Supply has led tours throughout North America from Alaska's Pribilof Islands to Hawai’i but has guided extensively here in Maine for over 20 years. He also worked as a Senior Leader for WINGS Birding, Inc. for over a decade, but now guides exclusively in Northern New England, from Vermont's Northeast Kingdom to Downeast Maine. Along with publications in numerous birding magazines, he is the author of How to Be a Better Birder (2012), Birdwatching in Maine: A Site Guide (2017), and the revised 2nd Edition, Birdwatching in Maine: The Complete Site Guide (2024).

What We Offer

​Come birding with the best to see how fantastic birding in Maine is! Up to date information, local expertise (including great local food!), and good company and conversation await. We can cater to a group of any size, from 1 to 100. Flexible, fun, educational, and rewarding!

Custom tours are available for birders of all ages and skills. From a few hours of one-on-one bird identification lessons to multi-day package tours, we will cater to you and the birds you want to see:

  • Specialty trips for “target species” such as Bicknell's Thrush, Roseate Tern, Nelson's and Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrows side-by-side

  • General bird-watching outings for all levels of skills and mobility 

  • Migration hotspots, including Monhegan Island

  • Introductory "how to bird" walks. 

  • Skill building outings, focusing on becoming a better birder

  • Breeding boreal specialties

  • Custom instructional workshops

  • Rarity "Twitches", including pick up/drop off from Portland International Jetport.​​

Group Tours

Rates: 
- Hourly: $75
- Half-day (4-5 hours): $250 for 1-3 people; $40/each additional person
- Full-day (8-9 hours): $450 for 1-3 people; $50/each additional person

Above rates include: Mileage, fuel, tolls, State Park entry fees, Derek's lunch, and all guiding services. 
Does not include: shared dinners, lodging, additional vehicle rental, parking fees, boat fees, etc. if necessary.

Terms:

20% deposit required to confirm a reservation. Credit card, check, or cash accepted.

If cancelled within 10 days, deposit only refundable if we are able to fill the spot. Deposit fully refundable if cancelled more than 10 days in advance.

Payment in full due on the day of the trip.
