Birdwalk Highlights for 8/24: Old Town House Park, North Yarmouth.

Taking advantage of a good flight of migrants overnight, we took a break from shorebirds to check the edges and scrub at OTP. And we were not disappointed!

A very diverse outing produced a number of migrants and plenty of breeding residents, with the highlight being a good look at an uncommon BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, perhaps having bred here this year. Headlining the migrants were two CAPE MAY WARBLERS: one adult male and one presumed immature female. A goodly total of at least 7 RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS were another highlight.

At least 12 AMERICAN REDSTARTS likely included some migrants as well as local breeders, with other migrants tallied today including 4 CHIMNEY SWIFTS, 2 BARN SWALLOWS, 2 NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES, and one each of MAGNOLIA WARBLER, BOBOLINK, and NASHVILLE WARBLER.

We had a good flycatcher day, too, with a nice look at an ALDER FLYCATCHER, at least 2 LEAST FLYCATCHERS, and a couple of EASTERN PHOEBES. We also heard an EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE and glimpsed 1 or 2 "TRAILL'S" FLYCATCHERS.

Migrants and/or breeding species included at least 11 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, 4 RED-EYED VIREOS, 3 YELLOW WARBLERS, 2 BLACK-AND-SHITE WARBLERS, 2 NORTHERN FLICKERS, 1 BROAD-WINGED HAWK, 1 BLUE-HEADED VIREO, 1 HOUSE WREN, 1 NASHVILLE WARBLER, and 1 WARBLING VIREO. Additionally, we had at least 20 SONG SPARROWS, 10 GRAY CATBIRDS, and 2 CAROLINA WRENS, and plenty of CEDAR WAXWINGS and AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES.
