Birdwalk Highlights for 7/6: Old Town House Park, North Yarmouth.

Few local patches are as productive in mid-summer as Old Town House Park, and it definitely did not disappoint today: it was pleasantly birdy, we heard and saw a lot, including lots of breeding activity, and finished it off with a "good" bird!

The surprise of the day was one of our last observations of the morning, a female ORCHARD ORIOLE that alighted on some Common Valerian at the edge of the field. This was my first observation of this species here in a few years, so whether this is a local breeder or a wandering bird, it was an unexpected surprise.

Although everything else was expected, the park was chock full of the species we come here for and expect. Lots of fledglings and agitated adults, too. We began with a family group of 4 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, and ended with the BOBOLINKS that we started out with (about 20 heard or seen today in all). We had great looks at two of the 4 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS, but only heard the SCARLET TANAGER. We only saw on "TRAILL'S" (Alder/Willow) FLYCATCHER today, but found a family of GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHERS, a pair of EASTERN KINGBIRDS, a family group of EASTERN PHOEBES, and heard a single EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE.

Other tallies included: 30 SONG SPARROWS, 20 AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES, 15 GRAY CATBIRDS, 12 CEDAR WAXWINGS, 6 YELLOW WARBLERS, 6 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, 5 RED-EYED VIREOS, 5 BARN SWALLOWS, 5 PURPLE FINCHES, 4 AMERICAN REDTSARTS, 3 WARBLING VIREOS, 2 EASTERN KINGBIRDS, 2 VEERIES, 2 PINE WARBLERS, and one each of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, AMERICAN KESTREL and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER.

In other words: yup, it was a great walk!
