Weather Summary: Onshore winds developed on Fri. and continued through Mon. with cooler temps (near, or just below normal). Calm winds overnight facilitated a wave of migrants for Fri. and Sat. mornings. A broad area of low pressure slowly moved East, with much-needed rain developing by Sun. morning and continuing intermittendly through Mon. Temps warmed on SW winds ahead of a Tues. night cold front, but clearing skies overnight seemed to produce at least a few migrants. Strong southwest winds on Wed. became light at night, and temps Thurs. morning tied the record low in Portland of 27F. 128 SURF SCOTERS and 458 BLACK SCOTERS were tallied in 1.5 hours from East Point Sanctuary in Biddeford Pool on 4/21. 42 RED-NECKED GREBES were spotted from Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: B-5) in two hours on the 23rd, mostly heading south. 210 raptors over Pownal’s Bradbury Mountain on the 20th included 184 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, while 302 tallied on the 25th included 193 Broad-wings and 52 OSPREYS. 7 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS arrived at Biddeford Pool on 4/23, along with 13 DUNLIN. Two PIPING PLOVERS returned to Scarborough Beach State Park (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on 4/15, while 4 were at nearby Ferry/Western Beaches (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on the same day. Two AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were in Biddeford Pool on the 21st. A 1st Cycle ICELAND GULL was at Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth on 4/23. 22 BLACK GUILLEMOTS tallied from 2 hours of seawatching at Dyer Point on the 23rd was a good count. Hopefully breeding activity can be confirmed for apparent pairs of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS at Robinson Woods in Cape Elizabeth (off of Shore Road; Delorme Map 3: A-5), Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco, and Hinckley Park in South Portland. A single Red-belly continues in a Cousin’s Island, Yarmouth yard as well. An early GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER was reported from Hinckley Park (off of Highland Road, Delorme Map 3: A-4) in South Portland on 4/22. The CAROLINA WREN continues here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth. Two BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS were at the edge of Great Pond in Biddeford Pool on the 21st. A good flight overnight on the 26-27th was in evidence with 25+ HERMIT THRUSHES being tallied at Hedgehog Mountain Park in Freeport. A overwintering GRAY CATBIRD continues at Portland’s Dragon Fields. One VESPER SPARROW had returned to the Kennebunk Plains by 4/22. A single “IPSWICH” SAVANNAH SPARROW at Biddeford Pool Beach, and two behind Hattie’s Deli in Biddeford Pool on the 21st were in expected locales, but one at Hinckley Park in South Portland the next day was out-of-place.
