Weather Summary: It was a cold and quiet week of weather as a broad northwesterly flow persisted (thanks to a deep low parked to our north) through Thursday, giving us mostly sunny skies but below normal temps. Highs rarely reached the mid-30’s and overnight lows were in the teens before moderating to near normal by Wednesday (normal= 44/27) and even reaching 51F on Thursday. Weak disturbances rotating around this system produced snow showers on Sunday and a few very light rain or snow showers on Wednesday. The cold, northwesterly winds have slowed the arrival of spring migrants this week. Seven SNOW GEESE continued behind the Pelreco building in Scarborough Marsh through 3/22, while two were present on the greens of the Woodlands Golfcourse in Falmouth on the 19th and 20th. The drake AMERICAN WIGEON that has overwintered in the Portland area was at Evergreen Cemetery on 3/17. An excellent count of 48 NORTHERN PINTAIL was made at the mouth of the Abagadasset River in Bowdoinham (Delorme Map 6: A-4) on 3/22. One REDHEAD has been around Biddeford Pool this week. On the 19th, it was in the pond near the convent in Biddeford Pool, while likely the same bird was a pond at Fortunes Rocks Beach two days later. A vanguard OSPREY was spotted over the mouth of the Fore River at the Falmouth/Portland line on 3/20. A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was spotted at Cape Neddick Harbor (Delorme Map 1: A-5) on the 18th, the same day that a MERLIN was at Evergreen Cemetery. One ICELAND GULL was at Long Beach in York (Delorme Map 1: B-5) and two were at Fortunes Rocks Beach in Biddeford on the 18th. An EASTERN PHOEBE was foraging in rip-rap at the edge of the Scarborough River at the parking lot for the Pine Point Lobster Co-op on 3/19. NORTHERN SHRIKES were found at the Double-T Orchards in Cumberland (off of Orchard Road, Delorme Map 5: C-4) on 3/18; at Pine Point in Scarborough Marsh on 3/18,); at Reid State Park in Georgetown on 3/18; along Gray Road in Falmouth (across from Eastern Road, Delorme Map 5: D-4 on 3/20; and one was singing at Hedgehog Mountain Park in Freeport on the 22nd. The CAROLINA WREN continues here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth. 40 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, along with 20 CEDAR WAXWINGS, discovered crabapples near the Yarmouth Town Hall and Public Library buildings on Main St. in Yarmouth (Delorme Map 5: D-5) on the 18th. 16 Bohemians were observed the next day, with 10 still present on the 21st. Meanwhile on the 22nd, a Topsham yard hosted 23 Bohemians as well. The FIELD SPARROW has officially overwintered successfully here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth, where it has been present since December 4th and continues through week’s end. A male SNOW BUNTING was at Portland’s Dragon Field (behind the Quarry Run Dogpark, near the intersection of Presumpscot and Ocean; Delorme Map 73: C-3) on 3/17. Observations and reports of BRANT, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, AMERICAN WOODCOCK, and SONG SPARROW also increased this week, while new arrivals reported included GADWALL, NORTHERN SHOVELER, GREATER SCAUP, and PIED-BILLED GREBE.
