This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. All locations not found in A Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of current and past messages can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com. Weather Summary: Temps moderated and returned to normal by Saturday (high = 39F in Portland). Temps then remained near, or even slightly above, normal despite mostly northwesterly winds through Thursday. Rain, ice, and/or snow fell Thursday afternoon ahead of an approaching warm front. Spring arrivals are definitely increasing, and thanks to all of the observers who submitted reports this week – keep ‘em coming! The 8 REDHEADS (4 male and 4 female) continue in Jones Creek in Scarborough Marsh, at least through 3/8. The birds have been spotted in Jones Creek (Delorme Map 3: B-3), which flows northward from behind the Pelreco building. Best viewing seems to be from behind or next to the Nestling Duck Gift Shop one hour before to one hour after high tide. One NORTHERN PINTAIL is also being seen here. Other waterfowl were on the move this week. 20 HARLEQUIN DUCKS at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth on 3/3 was a very good count for that location. The high count of BARROW’S GOLDENEYE from the Harraseekett River in South Freeport this week was only one male and one female, seen from Winslow Park (Delorme Map 6: D-1) on the 4th. Increasing numbers of HOODED and COMMON MERGANSERS were reported from a number of locations this week. A single TURKEY VULTURE was over U.S. Route 1 in Yarmouth on 3/6. 200+ PURPLE SANDPIPERS were on the jetty at the mouth of Wells Harbor back on 3/2. A NORTHERN SHRIKE present on 3/3 along Wallace Shore Road in East Harpswell (Delorme Map 6: D-3) has been present through much of the winter, and one was spotted in Gray Meadows (Delorme Map 5: C-4) on 3/9. Although it has not been frequenting the feeders, at least during store hours, the CAROLINA WREN at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth has been heard singing early in the mornings, so it does continue in the area. Overwintering GRAY CATBIRDS were found at Portland’s Dragon Field and in a Hill’s Beach yard, both on 3/4. The feeders at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth continue to host a FIELD SPARROW, while a Hill’s Beach feeder hosted a SAVANNAH SPARROW on the 9th. The trickle of arriving RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and COMMON GRACKLES increased this week.
