This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: Very strong southwest winds, temps in the upper 40’s, and rain (even some thunderstorms) preceded the Friday afternoon cold front that dropped temps 40 degrees on very strong northwest winds (a gust of 74 mph was recorded in Cape Elizabeth). A snow squall line moved through with the passage of a reinforcing cold front on Saturday morning (low temps Sunday morning were in the low single digits with wind chills as low as 20 below). Temps slowly moderated to season norms (normal high = 35 degrees), and weak disturbances produced snow showers on Tuesday and light rain turning snow on Thursday afternoon. After going unreported for over 2 weeks, the South Portland WESTERN TANAGER was seen again on Sunday, 2/19 and Monday, 2/20 at 27 Rhode Island Avenue (Delorme Map 73: H-2). Birders are welcome to look for the bird, as the feeders are visible from the road. Viewing suggestions and updated observations are posted at www.yarmouthbirds.com/bird_news.asp. Up to 15 BRANT were at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth this week. Small numbers of NORTHERN PINTAILS, HOODED MERGANSERS, and COMMON MERGANSERS were reported from a handful of locations this week - many of which were likely newly arriving spring migrants. A WOOD DUCK was noted in the Mousam River in Springvale (Delorme Map 2: C-3) this week, a hen GREEN-WINGED TEAL was at Saco's Laurel Hill Cemetery on 2/22, while a female LESSER SCAUP was in Jones Creek in Scarborough Marsh on the 18th. This week’s high count of 5 drake and 4 hen BARROW’S GOLDENEYES was tallied at Winslow Park on 2/19. A PACIFIC LOON was reported from the Cliff House in Ogunquit on 2/18. One juvenile NORTHERN GANNET was off of Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth on the 17th. An AMERICAN COOT was at the Fore River in Portland’s Stroudwater Crossing area (Delorme Map 73: F-1) on 2/17. A TURKEY VULTURE was spotted over Kennebunk on the 16th. A PEREGRINE FALCON was spotted in the Webhannet Marsh of Wells on the 18th. A KILLDEER was northbound over Fort Foster in Kittery on 2/20. A 1st-cycle BLACK-HEADED GULL photographed this week apparently has been frequenting the Kittery area this winter, and can reportedly be attracted to the parking lot of the Kittery Trading Post using some bread-based chumming! A second-cycle ICELAND GULL was at Kettle Cove on the 17th while a single BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE was spotted from Dyer Point that same day. RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS continues in Windham, West Kennebunk, and Cousin’s Island, Yarmouth yards and one continues to be reported on occasion from near the entrance to Winslow Park in Freeport. An EASTERN PHOEBE seen near Goosefare Brook in Saco (Delorme Map 3: C-3) was likely a very early spring arrival on the 19th. The good winter for NORTHERN SHRIKES continues. This week, one was singing at Fuller Farm in Scarborough (Off of Broadturn Road; Delorme Map 3:A-2) on 2/16 and 2/22, one was still along Webster Road in Freeport (Delorme Map 6: C-1) on the 18th, and another was spotted along Rte 111 in Biddeford, opposite the Park & Ride facility. A CAROLINA WREN continues in a Windham yard, and "our" bird returned to the Wild Bird Center on 2/22, when he was heard singing from behind the building. A PINE WARBLER continues in a Scarborough yard. The FIELD SPARROW continues here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth. A RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD joined 3 continuing RUSTY BLACKBIRDS at a West Kennebunk feeder on 2/18 and another Red-wing was at a Scarborough feeder on the 23rd. Meanwhile, a BALTIMORE ORIOLE that has been frequenting an Eliot feeder most of the winter continues this week as well. Freeport’s Florida Lake Park hosted 13 PINE GROSBEAKS (12 females and 2 immature male) on 2/18, with up to four still present the next day.
