Weather Summary: A cold front Thursday night produced a dusting of snow and reinforced the cold air. High temps were only in the low to mid 20’s through Saturday, with lows mostly in the single digits (Highs on Sunday were only in the low to mid teens). A strong Nor’Easter roared up the coast on Sunday, but dropping the heaviest snow to our south and east. Neverthe less, up to 12 inches fell along the York County coast, with as little as 4 inches in Western Cumberland County. Temperatures then rebounded on southwesterly winds Tuesday through Thursday. Wednesday’s high in Portland of 49F was 14 degrees above normal. The overwintering Portland AMERICAN WIGEON was seen again this week, but this time in the Fore River at Stroudwater Crossing (Delorme Map 73: F-2) on 2/9. A female COMMON EIDER was described from Freeport’s Winslow Park (Delorme Map 6: D-1) on 2/10 that may have been from the Hudson Bay population, subspecies sedentaria. 49 HARLEQUIN DUCKS was a good tally in Ogunquit on 2/11; 26 were seen from the Cliff House and another 23 were off of Marginal Way). 12 BARROW’S GOLDENEYES were this week’s high count from Winslow Park. A HOODED MERGANSER was also at Stroudwater Crossing in Portland on the 9th. One TURKEY VULTURE was spotted over Brunswick on Valentine’s Day. The Portland PEREGRINE FALCON returned to it’s former roost on the steeple of the church at the corner of Franklin and Cumberland in the city’s East End on 2/10, while the Brunswick/Topsham Peregrine continues to be see as well. 19 DUNLIN were still at Winslow Park on the 10th. An adult and a 1st cycle ICELAND GULL were at the Portland Fish Pier on 2/10, and a 1st cycle was at South Portland’s Mill Creek Cove on the 12th. A SNOWY OWL was reported from atop the Planet Dog warehouse building in Portland during Sunday’s snowstorm. It was viewed from the stretch of the Eastern Promenade multi-use trail between Commercial Street in Old Port and the mouth of Portland Harbor. A BELTED KINGFISHER was noted at Wharton Point in Brunswick on the 9th. RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS continue in yards on Cousin’s Island in Yarmouth and in Windham this week, while one was seen in Saco’s Laurel Hill Cemetery on 2/10. A CAROLINA WREN was singing along Marginal Way in Ogunquit, one continued in a Windham yard, one was singing in a Portland yard on the 16th, but the continuing individual here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth has not been seen in over a week (for the first time in months). A flock of 17 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS was a nice find in South Freeport Village (Delorme Map 6: D-1) on the 10th and a GRAY CATBIRD was in the Biddeford Pool neighborhood on 2/12. A FIELD SPARROW returned to a Hill’s Beach yard on the 13th after a month and a half absence, and one continues daily here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth. Two RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS visited a Falmouth feeder on the 11th. At least one PINE GROSBEAK was heard at Florida Lake Park in Freeport (Delorme Map 6: C-1) on 2/16.
