Weather Summary: Storms on Friday and Sunday passed to our west, leaving us with heavy rain and strong southerly winds of the “warm side” of the systems (high temps in the mid to upper 40’s). However, our ludicrously warm pattern finally began to change as cold air filtered in, and temperatures on Tuesday through Thursday only reached the upper 20’s (Tuesday was the first time in 22 days that we saw a high temperature that was below normal; normal = 33). The recent warm pattern resulted in some unseasonable bird reports this week, including very early arrivals. Only a couple of negative reports were received this week from birders seeking the South Portland *WESTERN TANAGER* at 27 Rhode Island Avenue. The bird could still be present. Nine BRANT were at Cape Elizabeth’s Kettle Cove on 2/5 and 20 were in the East Point, Biddeford Pool area on 2/9. This week’s high count of BARROW’S GOLDENEYE in the Harraseeket River in Freeport was 11 (7 drakes, 4 hens) made from the South Freeport Town Landing (Delorme Map 6: D-1) on the 8th while a COMMON MERGANSER was at Portland’s Back Cove on 2/7. Two TURKEY VULTURES were over Portland’s Dragon Field on 2/6 and another was over Desert Road in Freeport on the 8th. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was spotted at the intersection of Old Country Road and Webster Road in Freeport (Delorme Map 6: D-1) on the 2nd and ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were apparently on the move this week with singles at Laudholm Farms, Wells Reserve on the 2nd and one soaring northward over a Pownal yard on the 7th. Meanwhile, a MERLIN was along the pathway along Mill Creek Cove in South Portland on 2/4. Two dozen SANDERLINGS were at Reid State Park on the 4th. A second cycle ICELAND GULL was near Willard Beach in South Portland (Delorme Map 73: F-5) on 2/4. A NORTHERN SHRIKE made an appearance in a Scarborough yard this week. A good count of 50-60 HORNED LARKS and 10 LAPLAND LONGSPURS was made in the strawberry fields along Two Lights Road in Cape Elizabeth on 2/4. What was probably a TREE SWALLOW passed over the yard of one shocked observer in South Portland on 2/6. The Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth continues to host a CAROLINA WREN, while a WINTER WREN was discovered at Evergreen Cemetery on 2/5. One Scarborough yard is quite popular with “half-hardies,” as this week it hosted 7 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, a GRAY CATBIRD, a continuing PINE WARBLER, and a continuing EASTERN TOWHEE. 50 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS descended on a Cumberland yard on the 6th. A single YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was at Reid State Park on the 4th. The FIELD SPARROW continues here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth. Two RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS calling from the cattail marsh at Capisic Pond Park on the 5th were likely newly arriving migrants. COMMON REDPOLLS in the area are few and far between, with mostly 1-6 birds being reported from a few feeders, especially in Western Cumberland County.
