Hotline: Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert (Internet Only).
Date: Thursday, December 22, 2005 compiled at: 4:30pm.
To report: (207) 846-8002, or birds@yarmouthbirds.com.
Coverage: York, Cumberland, and Sagadahoc Counties.
This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. All locations not found in A Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of current and past messages can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com.
Weather Summary: Another strong, but-quick moving low on Friday dumped up to 7 inches of snow before changing to sleet, freezing rain, and eventually heavy rain (especially along the coast). Less snow accumulated along the coast where as much as 2 inches of rain fell in the pm. The rest of the week was pleasantly uneventful, except for some scattered snow showers with the passage of weak systems on Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures were slightly below normal, with highs mostly in the low to mid 30’s, even cooler after the passage of a weak cold front on Tuesday night, with high temps on Wednesday only in the low to mid 20’s.
The 26th annual Greater Portland Christmas Bird Count was conducted on Saturday the 17th. 100 species was tallied (plus 3 count week), with new high counts (all preliminary totals) set for CANADA GOOSE (914), MALLARD (1138), BLACK SCOTER (1273), HOODED MERGANSER (tie-33), COMMON LOON (220), BALD EAGLE (7), SHARP-SHINNED HAWK (7), RED-TAILED HAWK (35), and RING-BILLED GULL (823). The one lonely PURPLE FINCH was an all-time low.
2 RED KNOTS (among about 350 PURPLE SANPIPERS) discovered on Richmond Island was a first count record, as was an extremely late TREE SWALLOW over Spurwink Marsh in Cape Elizabeth. Three tardy BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS at Pine Point provided a second count record, 2 HERMIT THRUSHES (one at Western Cemetery in Portland and one at the Dragon Field) tied a high count and were only the 4th and 5th count records of this species.
Other excellent finds included: 2 continuing SNOW GEESE and 2 AMERICAN COOTS still at Grondin Pond in Scarborough, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK (Kettle Cove, Cape Elizabeth), a MERLIN (along the Fore River near the Portland Jetport), one LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL (Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth), ICELAND GULLS (singles at Dyer Point, Eastern Road in Scarborough Marsh, and Portland’s East End Beach), a SNOWY OWL (atop Fort Gorges in Portland Harbor), three RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS (one at Falmouth town landing, and a pair at a Cape Elizabeth feeder), an EASTERN PHOEBE (on Richmond Island), one NORTHERN SHRIKE (Winnock’s Neck in Scarborough Marsh), 2 CAROLINA WRENS (along Rte 77 in Cape Elizabeth and another in a Westbrook yard), a WINTER WREN (Sprague Estate, Scarborough), a total of 5 GRAY CATBIRDS (third highest total), a PINE WARBLER (at a Scarborough feeder), a FOX SPARROW (in a Portland yard), and a COMMON GRACKLE (also in a Portland yard).
Some highlights from the Lower Sheepscot CBC, also on the 17th, included: the continuing *BLUE GROSBEAK* in West Georgetown (see below), one WOOD DUCK (West Bath), one NORTHERN PINTAIL (Reid State Park), twelve BARROW’S GOLDENEYES (in the New Meadows River between the Bull Rock Road boat launch and King Point, West Bath; Delorme Map 6: B-4), a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK (Hermit Island Area), one MERLIN (in Georgetown), a continuing KILLDEER (Reid State Park), an AMERICAN WOODCOCK (Hermit Island area), one RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER (Phippsburg), a CAROLINA WREN (in a Bath yard), 2 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS near Popham Beach State Park, and 2 COMMON GRACKLES (Hermit Island Area).
The Isle of Shoals CBC on the 18th tallied 37 species, with the following highlights: the count’s second record of a JAEGER SP (probable POMARINE), 37 RAZORBILL, 2 SNOWY OWLS (one each on Appledore Island, ME and Star Island, NH), and 1 HERMIT THRUSH.
The York CBC was held on 12/19, but the only report that I have heard so far was that a RUSTY BLACKBIRD and a BOHEMIAN WAXWING were seen.
Other non-Christmas Count highlights include the following:
The West Georgetown *BLUE GROSBEAK* was nice enough to stick around to be seen on the Lower Sheepscot CBC on the 17th, but it was gone the next day.
Unexpectedly, a GREEN-WINGED TEAL has been visiting a Sunnyvale feeder along with MALLARDS since 12/16. A drake BARROW’S GOLDENEYE arrived off of Ocean Drive in Biddeford Pool on the 19th, while 5-6 Barrow’s (2 drakes and 3 hens) were at Winslow Park in Freeport (Delorme Map 6: D-1) as of 12/21. Also continuing there is a possible F2-type generation hybrid Barrow’s-like-goldeneye.
200-400 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were at Cape Elizabeth’s Two Lights State Park on 12/21.
A PEREGRINE FALCON was spotted alongside of the Casco Bay Bridge, on the South Portland side, on 12/20. It apparently landed under the bridge. Could this be the new roost of Portland’s overwintering bird?
A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER continues in a Cousin’s Island, Yarmouth yard where it is seen “basically from dawn to dusk.” Birders are welcome to look for this bird, contact the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth for more information.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was found in Brunswick on the 22nd, in a vacant lot just south of the Hannaford parking lot off of Maine Street (Delorme Map 78: C-2).
Eight EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were seen along Woodbridge Road in York Village (Delorme Map 1: B-5) on 12/20, with at least 5 still there the next day.
A YELLOW BREASTED CHAT is reportedly visiting a feeder “regularly” in Fortunes Rocks Beach, Biddeford as of 12/18.
The FIELD SPARROW continues at the feeders here at the Wild Bird Center.
A RED CROSSBILL was detected as it flew over Florida Lake Park, off of Wardtown Road (Rte 125) in Freeport (Delorme Map 6: C-1) on the 18th. That same morning, the park also hosted at least 3 PINE GROSBEAKS. Two females were seen, and a third bird was calling deeper in the woods. From the parking area for the park, follow the dirt road. Where the blue-diamonded trail splits off to the right, take that until you hit an open creek. The birds were in the woods to the right. The next day, two more PINE GROSBEAKS were seen and heard overhead, flying south over Verrill Road in Pownal, just north of Elmwood Road (Delorme Map 6: C-1).
The redpolls are coming, the redpolls are coming! A flight of COMMON REDPOLLS occurred during the storm on the 16th. 80+ descended on a Falmouth feeder, and 18 were here at the Wild Bird Center. Interestingly, only 5 were tallied on the Greater Portland CBC the next day. 6 to 10 have been at a West Georgetown feeder all week.
