This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: With high pressure in control, temperatures moderated over the weekend, especially on Sunday’s southerly winds. A Weak cold front passed early on Monday, but temperatures soon soared into the low 60’s on warm west winds (average high in Portland = 48) that eventually began to filter in cooler air. Beginning as sleet, rain developed on Tuesday ahead of a warm front. Fog and drizzle on strong southerly winds followed the front on Wednesday. A strong cold front produced more rain before clearing the whole mess out for Thursday. One week’s 1st state record is next week’s “trash bird.” (joke!) But, following last week’s first state record of the species, the Great Northeast **CAVE SWALLOW** irruption of ’05 finally reached Maine. One CAVE SWALLOW was photographed (1st photographed record for Maine) at Perkin’s Cove in Ogunquit on the 12th. Likely that same bird was at nearby Marginal Way the next morning. Also on 11/13, a single CAVE, along with a TREE SWALLOW, was high over Kittery’s Seapoint Beach in the late morning. Then, after 3 CAVES, along with 7 BARN SWALLOWS, were seen at Fort Foster in Kittery at 3:30pm on the 14th, 5 CAVES (some of which were photographed) were seen there in the morning of the 15th (as were one Barn and one TREE). Furthermore, an additional CAVE was spotted at Reid State Park in Georgetown (over Mile Beach) on 11/15. A SNOW GOOSE continues at Thornhurst Farm along Rte 115 in North Yarmouth (Delorme Map 5: D-5) at least through the 11th. One HARLEQUIN DUCK arrived at Cape Elizabeth’s Two Lights State Park on the 14th, 15 were at the Cliff House in Ogunquit on the 11th, while at least 11 were along Ogunquit’s Marginal Way/Perkin’s Cove by the 13th. Meanwhile, three RUDDY DUCKS were still at Grondin Pond (off of Clearwater Rd in Scarborough, Delorme Map 3: B-4) on 11/16. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK passed over Florida Lake Park in Freeport (off of Wardtown Road, Delorme Map 6: C-1) on the 12th, while PEREGRINE FALCONS continue in downtown Portland and along the Brunswick/Topsham riverfront, as well as one at Reid State Park on 11/15. Up to 5 AMERICAN COOTS were at Scarborough Beach State Park this week, while one was in Grondin Pond in Scarborough on 11/16. A “WESTERN” WILLET was seen at Ferry Beach in Scarborough (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on the 13th. Fifteen SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, along with 4 STILT SANDPIPERS were reported from along Drakes Island Road in Wells (Delorme Map 3: E-1) on the 11th. Two BLACK-HEADED GULLS were reported from Short Sands Beach (just north of the Cape Neddick peninsula) in York Beach on 11/13. Meanwhile, two (the same two?) were at Fort Foster two days later. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER returned to a West Kennebunk yard on the 11th. An exceptionally late LEAST FLYCATCHER was reported from Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth on the 12th. Attempts to relocate this bird were unsuccessful. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was found on the grounds of Brunswick High School, off of Maquoit Road (Delorme Map 6: C-3) on 11/14. It was in the fields visible as you drive into the school’s parking lots. A Falmouth yard hosted a tardy BLUE-HEADED VIREO on the 11th. While the CAROLINA WREN here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth was only seen once this week (1:30-1:35pm, 11/17), one continues to be seen sporadically in a Portland yard. A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was discovered at Two Lights State Park on 11/14, on the scrubby hillside to the left of the entrance road, approximately 150 feet beyond the gate. A late FIELD SPARROW was at Fort Foster in Kittery on the 13th. “IPSWICH” SAVANNAH SPARROWS were on the move this week, with 1-2 reported from multiple locations this week, with high counts of 5 at Seapoint Beach in Kittery on 11/13 and 9 at Seawall Beach in Phippsburg (Delorme Map 6: E-5) the same day. Meanwhile, 8 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were behind Hattie’s Deli in Biddeford Pool on 11/13. A female ORCHARD ORIOLE visited a Cape Neddick (village of) yard on 11/16.
