Weather Summary: Strong west winds on Monday followed an overnight cold front and assosciated rain. Northwest winds increased on Tuesday, following a weak disturbance. Overnight lows dipped down into the 20’s throughout the area. Mixed precipitation turned to all rain overnight on Wednesday, as a strong cold front pushed through the area. Cloudy skies, and cool northwest winds followed for Thursday and Friday. This continued dynamic weather pattern has helped to produce exciting rarities again this week. Two ***CAVE SWALLOWS*** were observed over the Pine Point neighborhood in Scarborough at about 3:30pm on 11/8. Efforts to relocate the birds were unsuccessful. This would be Maine’s first state record of this species. The Sanford Sewage Ponds hosted 5 REDHEADS and 40 RUDDY DUCKS on the 5th. Two more Redheads were on the Fortunes Rocks Beach ponds (off of King’s Highway), Delorme Map 3: C-3) on 11/9 with one still there on the 11th. Meanwhile, seven HARLEQUIN DUCKS were at the Cliff House in Ogunquit on the 6th with 11 at nearby Marginal Way by the 10th. Two AMERICAN COOTS continued in the gold course pond along Eastern Road’s north end in Scarborough all week, six were at the Sanford Sewage Ponds on the 5th, and a single was at Back Cove in Portland on the 10th. The unprecedented November numbers of LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS continue, with as many as 20 being seen in salt pannes off the northeast end of Eastern Road in Scarborough Marsh on 11/7. One STILT SANDPIPER was also there that day as well. A CASPIAN TERN was spotted over Goosefare Brook, where it passes under Route 9 in Saco (Delorme Map 3: C-3) on the 5th, while a juvenile/1st winter COMMON TERN in the Pine Point Narrows on the 7th could have been the same individual seen the day before in South Portland. An exceptionally late COMMON NIGHTHAWK was observed at 4:00pm over Pine Point in Scarborough on 11/6. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER dropped by a Woolwich yard on 11/7 and one was seen flying in high from off the ocean in Biddeford Pool on the 9th. Although a small number of Red-bellies have been seen this fall in the area, the numbers do not compare to last fall’s irruption. An animated map of last year’s invasion can now be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com/rbwo.asp A chilly RED-EYED VIREO was lingering at Hedgehog Mountain Park in Freeport (off of Pownal Road, Delorme Map 6: C-1) on the 9th. 3-4 TREE SWALLOWS were over the Biddeford Pool area on the 8th, while seven tardy BARN SWALLOWS passed over Seapoint Beach in Kittery the same day. The Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth continues to host a CAROLINA WREN and one was at the parking lot for Biddeford Pool Beach on the 11th. A late BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was along the Saco Bay Trails off of Old Orchard Beach’s Ocean Park neighborhood (Delorme Map 3: C-3) on the 5th. Tardy WARBLERS include one BLACK-THROATED GREEN along the Saco Bay Trail in Old Orchard Beach on 11/5, and single BLACKPOLLS at Fort Foster and Seapoint Beach in Kittery on 11/8. Bug Light Park in South Portland (Delorme Map 73: E-4) hosted a single “IPSWICH” SAVANNAH SPARROW on the 10th as did Portland’s Back Cove the next day. Six LAPLAND LONGSPURS were behind Hattie’s Deli in Biddeford Pool on 11/8. Two RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were in the neighborhood near The Nubble on Cape Neddick on the 8th and another two were in the Biddeford Pool neighborhood on 11/11. A late BALTIMORE ORIOLE was seen at Portland’s Capisic Pond Park on 11/9.
