This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. This alert was updated on Thursday, October 13, 2005 with highlights that include: the continuing SANDHILL CRANE, a WHITE-EYED VIREO, a LITTLE and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, and yet more YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS. Record warm low temperatures, 56 and 59 degrees respectively, were set Thursday and Friday and the high temperature on Friday of 75 in Portland was 14 degrees above normal. That was about to change. With a cold front stalling over Maine on Friday night, an onshore flow and tropical moisture -in part from the remnants of Tammy - combined to produce heavy rain all weekend (including a record shattering 4-8 inches in places on Saturday) which led to some local flooding. A series of weak low pressure systems then tracked along this stalled front producing clouds and showers through Tuesday. Although the onshore flow continued on Wednesday, we did dry out a bit – and even saw sun – ahead of a coastal storm approaching late Thursday. Seawatching was productive, as seabirds and waterfowl were not slowed down much by this weather, but landbird migration was reduced to just a trickle on most nights. 1 LESSER SCAUP, and 3 LONG-TAILED DUCKS were new arrivals spotted passing the Lobster Shack at Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth on 10/13. Meanwhile, SURF, WHITE-WINGED, and BLACK SCOTERS are on the move in increasing numbers. Single GREATER and SOOTY SHEARWATERS were spotted from Dyer Point on 10/10 and hundreds of NORTHERN GANNETS were feeding there all week. 1006 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS were tallied from the Lobster Shack in two hours on the 10th, and GREAT CORMORANTS are increasing in the area. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK passed over the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth on 10/12 and a PEREGRINE FALCON was at Portland’s Eastern Promenade earlier that day. The SANDHILL CRANE at Maxwell’s Farm in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 73: G-4) continued this week, at least through the 11th. It is most often seen in the northeast corner of the farm, in the plowed field near Sawyer Street. A dirt road through the center of the farm, is open to the public (please respect the posted rules), and can be accessed by either Sawyer Street (park near the “Blasting Area” sign 0.7 miles southwest of Sawyer’s intersection with Ocean Ave – Route 77) or via the parking lot at Maxwell’s farm stand on Spurwink Avenue. Other birds noted at Maxwell’s this week included 14 HORNED LARKS on the 10th and an INDIGO BUNTING on the 12th. Two late HUDSONIAN GODWITS were found in a flooded field along the entrance road (just before the main parking area) in the Wainright Farm Recreation Area, at the end of the Gary L. Maietta Parkway (which is off of Highland Ave in South Portland; Delorme Map 3: A-4) on 10/12. One continued there the next day. A basic-plumaged adult LITTLE GULL was well described by a young birder in Middle Bay, near Scrag Island, off of Harpswell on the 9th, 125+ BONAPARTE’S GULLS were feeding off of Pine Point in Scarborough on 10/10, while a 2nd cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was roosting at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth on 10/9. Two BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES were spotted from Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth on the 13th. The season’s first RAZORBILL was spotted passing East Point Sanctuary in Biddeford Pool on the 11th. More YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS this week with singles at Crescent Beach State Park in Cape Elizabeth (10/7), behind the Pelreco Building in Scarborough Marsh (10/12), Portland’s Dragon Field (10/13), and Capisic Pond Park in Portland (10/13). An immature WHITE-EYED VIREO was found at Capisic Pond Park on 10/12. A tardy TREE SWALLOW was behind Hattie’s Deli in Biddeford Pool on 10/11. A CAROLINA WREN was along Portland’s Eastern Promenade on 10/13. Single ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were found at Mackworth Island, Falmouth, on 10/12, Portland’s Eastern Promenade (between the new school construction and the Promenade East Condo) on 10/12, and in Portland’s Dragon Field on the 13th. Meanwhile, some of the later WARBLERS noted around the area this week included a YELLOW at Crescent Beach State Park in Cape Elizabeth on 10/7, one AMERICAN REDSTART at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland on the 10th, and a BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER at East Point Sanctuary in Biddeford Pool on the 11th. Other lingering passerines included 3 SCARLET TANAGERS at Evergreen Cemetery on the 9th, eight BLUE-HEADED VIREOS at Evergreen on the 10th, and single immature ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK on a South Portland feeder on the 11th and at Portland’s Dragon Field on the 13th.
