This alert was updated on Thursday, July 7, 2005 with highlights that include: the continuing CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, a TRICOLORED HERON, an ORCHARD ORIOLE, YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, and the first southbound shorebirds. A cold front on Friday night triggered some showers and thunderstorms, but cleared out rapidly on Saturday, setting up a Chamber-of-Commerce-Beautiful Holiday weekend, with low humidity, mostly sunny skies, and temperatures ranging from the mid 70’s to mid 80’s with cool, pleasant nights. Humidity increased on southerly winds on Tuesday, ahead of a cold front passing through on Wednesday morning. The front then stalled, producing onshore winds with rain, drizzle, and cool temperatures through Thursday. A total of 6 BLUE-WINGED TEAL, mostly drakes, were in the salt pannes off of Eastern Road in Scarborough Marsh on 7/3. 2 SOOTY SHEARWATERS passed by Dyer Point, Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on the morning of 7th while over 75 WILSON’S STORM PETRELS were swirling around the area. The TRICOLORED HERON was relocated behind the Pelreco building in Scarborough Marsh on 7/3. It was seen again the next day, but has not been reported since. A MERLIN buzzed through Portland’s Dragon Field on 7/2. Southbound shorebird migration is underway. 11 LESSER YELLOWLEGS off of Eastern Road in Scarborough Marsh on the 3rd were likely “Fall” migrants, while three GREATER YELLOWLEGS, one WHITE-RUMPED SANPIPER, and one SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER in the marsh the same day could have been continuing lingering birds. At least two Greater Yellowlegs were also heard around Flying Point in Freeport (Delorme Map 6: D-2) on the 4th, two SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were reported from Pine Point in Scarborough on 7/3, and two LEAST SANDPIPERS arrived at Kennebunk Beach this week. A Phippsburg yard hosted a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO on 7/6. This same yard has hosted a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO sporadically this summer as well. A male ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen near the boat ramp at Parker Pond in Casco (Delorme Map 5: B-1) on 7/2. The Freeport CLAY-COLORED SPARROW continued through the weekend, but it has not been seen since. To reach Hedgehog Mountain Park from I-295, take exit 22 to Rtes.125/136 north towards Durham. At the stop sign (where Rtes. 125/136 bear off to the right), make a left onto Durham Road. Follow this (becomes Pownal Road after the 90 degree turn) for 1.1 miles to Hedgehog Mountain Road on the left. (Delorme Map 6: C-1).
