This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. This alert was updated on Thursday, June 30, 2005 with highlights that include: A continuing CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, TRICOLORED HERON, and possible YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS. Oppressive (for Maine anyway) summer weather continued all week, with hot, hazy, humid days with only minor relief immediately after the passage of weak cold fronts on Sunday night and Wednesday afternoon. Sea breezes also helped to moderate temperatures along the coast on some days, but not on Saturday when even coastal temperatures soared into the mid 90’s. Portland tied a record high of 94 on Saturday, for example. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms, including isolated severe storms, occurred on most days this week as well. Things cooled down significantly with the onset of onshore winds on Thursday afternoon thanks to a stalled frontal boundary. The CLAY-COLORED SPARROW continues to sing away at Hedgehog Mountain Park in Freeport. From I-295, take exit 22 to Rtes.125/136 north towards Durham. At the stop sign (where Rtes. 125/136 bear off to the right), make a left onto Durham Road. Follow this (becomes Pownal Road after the 90 degree turn) for 1.1 miles to Hedgehog Mountain Road on the left. (Delorme Map 6: C-1). Meanwhile, a single PRAIRIE WARBLER also continues there, as do other locally uncommon species such as CLIFF SWALLOW, HOUSE WREN, EASTERN TOWHEE, and FIELD SPARROW. A single GREATER SHEARWATER and 100+ WILSON’S STORM-PETRELS were spotted from a whalewatching trip out of Portland on the 25th. An AMERICAN BITTERN was observed in Gray Meadows (Delorme Map 5: C-4) on 6/27, while a TRICOLORED HERON was observed on the north end of the Eastern Road Trail through Scarborough Marsh on 6/25. No further reports of the Heron were received. UPLAND SANDPIPERS, GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS, and the usual cast of characters were seen at the Kennebunk Plains this week. One adult BLACK TERN offshore about a mile out of Casco Bay on 6/25 seemed unusual. Two possible YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS were seen on Highland Road in Brunswick (Delorme Map 6: C-2) on the 28th. Two PRAIRIE WARBLERS were found singing off of Merrill Road in Pownal (Delorme Map 6: C-1) on the 26th.
