This recording was updated on Thursday, September 9, 2004. It was a very fall-like, cool and dry week despite mostly southerly breezes. By Wednesday, however, moisture from an approaching front and the remnants of Hurricane Frances pushed into the area, bringing muggier conditions followed by heavy rains and moderate easterly winds by Thursday morning. No fronts moved through this week, so no major waves of songbird migrants were detected. An apparently aberrant TRICOLORED HERON seen on September 3rd behind the Pelreco Plant in Scarborough Marsh may have been present since at least August 29th. Tricolors are fairly rare birds in Maine, especially this year, so this unusual individual warranted some scrutiny. Some of the odd plumage features of this bird include overall color, some white on the throat and chin, and grayish on the undertail. However, shape, size, structure, and other plumage details fit Tricolored. Observers should take note of any additional field marks on this bird, but there is no reason to believe it is anything other than a weird Tricolored. Western Reef-Heron and other vagrants do not appear to be an option. If anyone gets some good photographs of this bird, please send them to birds@yarmouthbirds.com. 6 adult and 3 juvenile AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS were in sod fields off Mayhall Road near the Gray/New Gloucester border (Delorme: Map 5, B-4) on the 9th. Single Golden Plovers were at Biddeford Pool on 9/3, and at the mouth of the Morse River in Popham Beach State Park, Georgetown on the 5th. Two SOLITARY SANDPIPERS were at Portland's Dragon Fields (near the intersection of Ocean Ave and Presumpscot Streets near the Falmouth border) and 43 LESSER YELLOWLEGS were along the Eastern Prom on the 6th. Two WHIMBREL and two HUDSONIAN GODWITS were at Biddeford Pool on 9/3, and the two MARBLED GODWITS at Half-Mile Beach, Reid Beach State Park, Georgetown continued from last week - at least through the 2nd. Three adult RED KNOTS were at Biddeford Pool on 9/3. Meanwhile, counts of juveniles of the more common shorebird species continue to improve. About 250 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS were at Back Cove in Portland on the 7th. Of the115 birds that were identified to age, 106 were juveniles. However, some observers still feel overall numbers are way down this year. Since it is difficult to compare year-to-year totals of migrant birds - given the variables of migration - we can remain only cautiously optimistic about this year's High-Arctic shorebird breeding success. BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS continue to be seen more frequently than most years. One juvenile was on the beach near the Scarborough/Old Orchard Beach town line on the 3rd (Delorme: Map 3, B-3). A very impressive total of 6 were at the mouth of the Morse River, Popham Beach State Park, Phippsburg on September 4th, with one remaining the next day. One POMARINE and one PARASITIC JAEGER were spotted at Dyer Point, Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3, B-5) on the 9th. Odd for the location at this season was a COMMON RAVEN over the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth on 9/4. A vociferous MARSH WREN was unusual for Portland's Dragon Field on the 6th. Fewer warblers were noted this week, mostly due to the southerly breezes. Single PRAIRIE WARBLERS were detected at Royal River Park in Yarmouth (Delorme: Map 5, D-5) on the 3rd, and another at Portland's Eastern Promenade on the 6th. One BAY-BREASTED WARBLER was at Sandy Point Beach, Cousin's Island, Yarmouth on the 4th.
