This alert was updated on Thursday, June 16, 2005 with highlights that include: A possible ***PLUMBEOUS VIREO***, a possible TRICOLORED HERON, fly-by ATLANTIC PUFFIN and COMMON MURRE, LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH, and ORCHARD ORIOLE. High pressure remained in control through Monday, producing a very summer like weather pattern. Temperatures were well above normal (mostly in the mid to upper 80’s, but often cooler along the coast as usual). Southerly winds also carried in very high humidity, hazy skies, and afternoon thunderstorms. Weren’t we just complaining about it being too cold? A cold front moved through early Tuesday, stalled, sucked in the moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Arlene and heavy rain fell. A broad area of low pressure then settled in, an onshore flow developed, temperatures dropped (high temps only in the upper 40’s along the coast on Wednesday), and cold and wet weather returned. Weren’t we just complaining about it being too hot? Very few reports were received this week, likely because of the weather as well as reduced birder activity in the summer. The chance to study and observe breeding species, along with the chance for vagrants, makes this a great time to get out. Some of the goodies reported nearby in the past couple of weeks include an Anhinga in Vermont, Scissor-tailed Flycatcher, Loggerhead Shrike, and Western Tanager in New Brunswick, and White-faced Ibis, Wilson’s Plover, and Western Kingbird in Massachusetts to name a few! And speaking of vagrants in Maine, a possible ***PLUMBEOUS VIREO*** was observed and photographed by seabird biologists on Matinicus Rock (Knox County, Delorme Map 9: D-1)) on June 11. The bird was not relocated after the original observation, but photos are being circulated, and most authorities are leaning towards Plumbeous (a first state, and 2nd New England record), but there seems to only be a little doubt that it is something other than a “Solitary” Vireo of some sort. 31 COMMON LOONS and 15 RED-THROATED LOONS were still moseying northbound past Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on 6/15. A lone SOOTY SHEARWATER was spotted from Stratton Island (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on 6/10. Small numbers of WILSON’S STORM PETRELS were seen from a number of locations scattered around the coast this week. Word was received of a TRICOLORED HERON that was reported from the Morse Mountain Reserve in Phippsburg (Delorme Map 6: E-5) on 6/9. A COMMON MURRE was spotted off of Stratton Island on the 10th, while one RAZORBILL and one ATLANTIC PUFFIN passed by Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth during easterly winds on the 15th. One YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was at Reid State Park, along the western edge of the ½ Mile Beach parking lot, in Georgetown, on 6/12. Both ALDER and WILLOW FLYCATCHERS were heard from the same spot at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester (Delorme Map 5: C-4). One PURPLE MARTIN passed over Gilsland Farm in Falmouth on the 11th. Single male PRAIRIE WARBLERS made unexpected appearances in yards in heavily wooded areas in both South Casco (6/13) and Freeport, where one has been singing for over 3 weeks. Another was in more expected habitat at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester on the 16th. A LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH was heard at a traditional spot, along Center Road in Gray (Delrome Map 5: C-3). Meanwhile, a MOURNING WARBLER was singing on Stratton Island from 6/11-13. 12 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS was an excellent tally at Kennebunk Plains on the 11th. A number of NELSON’S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS were very active and visible at low tide along the Little River in Reid State Park on 6/12.
