Fewer birders were out, but more birders were staying dry watching their feeders, which was very productive this week. Clearing skies Thursday night produced a good movement of birds Friday morning, with temperatures on Friday finally reaching normal (high= 65 in Portland). However, it was a brief respite. An “upper level cutoff low” was stuck overhead, allowing unsettled weather, rain, fog, drizzle, and cold temperatures to continue. A stronger storm Saturday night and Sunday produced heavier rains, but a rare strong, late-May Nor’Easter battered the coast Tuesday and Wednesday packing 50+mph winds, coastal flooding (no thanks to the astronomical high tides), and yes, more rain. Did I mention it rained a lot this week? The big bird news continues to be the plethora of unusual feeder visitors (such as warblers, GRAY CATBIRDS, SCARLET TANAGERS, and lots of BALTIMORE ORIOLES – such as the 15-20 in a West Kennebunk feeding station), no doubt due to the cold temperatures, lots of rain, and lack of bugs. A *HOODED WARBLER* visited a Freeport yard on 5/19, while a female/immature-type was found (or re-found) at Evergreen Cemetery on 5/22. It was along the trail on the backside of the ponds. Neither bird has been reported since. A *SUMMER TANAGER* was heard at Richmond Fort Park in Richmond (Delorme Map 12: E-5) on 5/19. A *WHITE-EYED VIREO* was discovered at Capisic Pond Park in Portland on the 22nd. About 20 WILSON’S STORM PETRELS were spotted from Outer Green Island (Delorme Map ) this week. Three VIRGINIA RAILS were in the Gray Meadows in Gray (Delorme Map 5: C-4). A pair of AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were off of Prout’s Neck on the 26th, the first WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER of the season arrived at Kettle Cove on 5/26, while 2 UPLAND SANPIPERS were noted at the Kennebunk Plains on 5/21. The strong onshore winds have blown numerous RED-NECKED PHALAROPES into nearshore waters. At least 3 were spotted from Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on the 24th, one was in Kettle Cove, Cape Elizabeth on 5/25 (with 4 there the next day), 10 passed by Dyer Point on the 26th, with a single female close to shore in the cove there. Meanwhile, 150+ were off of Outer Green Island on 5/25 with 30-40 the next day. Furthermore, at least 12 RED PHALAROPES have been seen from Outer Green Island each of the last two days, after the first three were spotted on 5/24. A single BLACK TERN was in York Harbor on 5/23, two were in Kettle Cove on the 25th, and 2 passed by Dyer Point on the 26th. COMMON TERNS returned this week. Over 125 were tallied from Dyer Point, Cape Elizabeth, during the easterly gales on the 24th, with 225 passing by on the 26th. 2 ROSEATE TERNS were seen both days, with 3 and 2 ARCTIC TERNS, respectively, spotted as well. Two more Arctics were at nearby Kettle Cove on 5/25 as well. A single BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was at Bug Light Park in South Portland (Delorme Map 73: E-4) on the 20th. At least 6 PRAIRIE WARBLERS were on territory at the Kennebunk Plains on 5/21, while a MOURNING WARBLER was singing at the edge of the parking lot of Portland’s Dragon Field on 5/23. A ragged CLAY-COLORED SPARROW has been hanging on at the south end of Outer Green Island through week’s end, while at least two 2 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS are back in at the Kennebunk Plains as of 5/21. Yarmouth has apparently become the ORCHARD ORIOLE capital of Maine! One adult male has reappeared at the feeders here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth, and has visited regularly every day this week. This could be the male of a pair now being seen in a yard near Yarmouth village center, while another male is at a feeder on Cousin’s Island. But, an unbelievable SIX (two pairs and two immature males) have been frequenting oranges and grape jelly in yet another Yarmouth yard! Other new arrivals this week included: DUNLIN, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, WHIP-POOR-WILL, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, and PHILADELPHIA VIREO.
