This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. You can report your sightings after this recording, but please include your name and phone number. All locations not found in A Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of current and past messages can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com
This recording was updated on Thursday, May 19, 2005 with highlights that include: a male **PAINTED BUNTING**, a *SUMMER TANAGER*, two *GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS*, WILSON’S PHALAROPE, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, ORCHARD ORIOLES, BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, lots of migrants and new arrivals.
It was a very busy week for birds and birders. Temperatures remained below normal and rain fell almost daily through today as a series of weak disturbances repeatedly moved through the area, keeping the weather unsettled. Bird feeding stations have been inundated this week with Neotropical migrants searching out alternative food sources. Meanwhile, warblers are arriving en masse, and by Wednesday, 19 species a day were being recorded at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland, for example.
A male **PAINTED BUNTING** is visiting a bird feeder in Saco since May 15th, and continues at least through the 18th. From I-95, take I-195 East (towards Old Orchard Beach). Take US Route 1 south to a right (at a light with a U-Haul on the corner) onto Hutchins St. Follow to end, then left onto Lyman St. Stop at the sign for “Fieldview Estates”. (Delorme Map 3: B-2). The bird is visiting the feeder at the end condo on the right. As always, when visiting a bird on private property, we must be on our best behavior!
This from Linda Woodard of Maine Audubon: “The bird is in a private condominium complex. Although the folks said people could come and see the bird. We are not sure however, if the neighbors share that view. The parking down that end of the road is very limited so people should make an effort to carpool. . .The bird does seem to stay in the yard and adjoining woods. . .” [I agree completely with this, and let’s do our best to be welcome the next time a great bird shows up in this, or any other, neighborhood! – D].
Two *GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS* were found this week. A male was in Evergreen Cemetery (near the northeast corner of the main ponds) on 5/18, and a female visited a Falmouth yard the next day.
An adult male *SUMMER TANAGER* was discovered in the woodlot behind the University of New England’s athletic fields in Hill’s Beach on 5/18.
Three VIRGINIA RAILS were heard calling in the New Gloucester Marsh (along the railroad tracks that border the Royal River, where the tracks cross Rte 231, in New Gloucester (Delorme Map 5: B-4) on 5/17.
A single RED KNOT was at Pine Point in Scarborough on 5/14. One WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and a single WILSON’S PHALAROPE were behind the Pelreco building in Scarborough Marsh on 5/16.
One BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was in a Hill’s Beach yard on the 18th.
BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS were seen a few times this week. An immature male is hanging out in Evergreen Cemetery (usually along the trail between the large ponds and the junk pond as it passes the edge of the cement company, or near the Westbrook College athletic fields) since 5/12. It was seen through 5/19. Meanwhile, a female was at Evergreen, near the wood chip pile beyond the gate on the south side of the ponds on the 19th as well. Yet another Blue-wing was at Laudholm Farms in Wells on 5/18, while two have returned to their traditional spot: Rotary Park in Saco (Delorme Map 3: B-2).
One CAPE MAY WARBLER was noted in Evergreen Cemetery on 5/14, and another was in a Falmouth yard on 5/19. PRAIRIE WARBLERS put in appearances at Evergreen Cemetery (1: 5/17 and 2: 5/18), a Berwick yard (1: 5/16), Capisic Pond Park in Portland (1: 5/16-18), and Laudholm Farms (2: 5/17).
SCARLET TANAGERS have also been unusually common “yard birds” this week, as were ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS (such as the 10+ in a Windham yard on 5/13).
ORCHARD ORIOLES were unusually (relatively) common in the area this week. 2 were at the orange and jelly feeders here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth on 5/14, while a single was present through the 16th. Another Orchard was at a Hill’s Beach feeder on 5/15, and 2 were in a Wells yard on 5/16. An immature male appeared in a Falmouth yard on the 19th as well.
Meanwhile, BALTIMORE ORIOLES were increasing, and regularly visited feeding stations this week, with a high of 20+ in a Windham yard on 5/13.
A presumably escaped EUROPEAN GOLDFINCH visited a Hill’s Beach feeder on 5/19.
A small flurry of EVENING GROSBEAKS were reported this week: 4 continue at a Windham feeder, while others were noted in Evergreen Cemetery (4 on 5/15), a Wells yard (2 on 5/16), a Falmouth yard (6 on 5/17), and a Hill’s Beach yard (2 on 5/18) – it’s great to see coastal sightings of Evening Grosbeaks again!
New arrivals this week included: SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, RUDDY TURNSTONE, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, ALDER FLYCATCHER, GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER, EASTERN KINGBIRD, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, TENNESSEE WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, CANADA WARBLER, LINCOLN’S SPARROW, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW.
Thank you for calling, and see you in the field!
