This recording was updated on Thursday, April 7, 2005 with highlights that include: a drake EURASIAN WIGEON, a continuing LARK SPARROW, KING EIDER, and SNOWY OWLS, along with a TRICOLORED HERON, MUTE SWAN, BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS, AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER, and many newly arrived migrants. It was a very active week of weather, and a very active week of migration. A strong storm moved up the East Coast and affected us from Saturday morning through Monday. The storm produced over 2 inches of rain, which along with snowmelt led to some minor flooding. Southerly breezes before and after that storm helped usher in a number of new arrivals. A drake *EURASIAN WIGEON* was discovered in Scarborough Marsh on the 5th. It was in the large salt panne on the east side of Route 1/9, as the highway begins to climb the hill on the marsh’s southern side, late in the day. However, in the mornings on both the 6th and 7th, the Eurasian Wigeon was seen behind the Pelrico building off of Pine Point Road. 25 AMERICAN WIGEON at Pelrico as well was a good count for southern Maine. On 4/5, the *LARK SPARROW* in the neighborhood near Nubble Light on Cape Neddick was in the same patch of grass off Shelton Ave that it was found in last week. See last week’s RBA at www.yarmouthbirds.com for specific directions. A MUTE SWAN was in Webhannet Marsh, off Harbor Road in Wells, on the 5th, while the 2nd winter male KING EIDER continued in Wells Harbor through 4/4. A duck that can be described as nothing other than “wacky” was found in Great Pond, off Fowler Road in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on the 4th. With a plumage superficially like a male Smew (!), the bird appears to be some sort of aberrant Bucaphala (Bufflehead or Goldeneye). A single LITTLE BLUE HERON arrived behind the Pelrico building in Scarborough Marsh on 4/2. Meanwhile, a TRICOLORED HERON was reported from Harbor Road in Wells on 4/4. By the 6th, 17 GLOSSY IBIS were present in Scarborough Marsh. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK traveled along Pownal Road in Freeport (Delorme Map 6: C-1) on the 31st. The first PIPING PLOVER returned to Hills Beach in Biddeford on 3/4, while 2 were at Laudholm Beach in Wells by the next day. 2 AMERICAN OYSTERCATHCERS were spotted flying up the Scarborough River from Prout’s Neck on the 6th. A 2nd cycle GLAUCOUS GULL lingered at the Portland Fish Pier at least through the 1st. A SNOWY OWL was atop a telephone pole near some abandoned warehouses on Thompson’s Point in Portland, as spotted from I-295 on 3/31 (Delorme Map 73: F-2). A NOTHERN SHRIKE was found in Pownal, off of Merrill Road, just south of its intersection with Verrill Road (Delorme Map 6: C-1) on the 31st. EASTERN PHOEBES finally arrived this week, a couple of weeks behind schedule. One at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland on the 1st was followed by many more sightings as the week progressed. Up to 41 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS cleaned out crabapples around the Yarmouth Public Library and Town Hall buildings on Main Street in Yarmouth (Delorme Map 5: D-5) between 3/31 and 4/4. A single YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER returned to Cape Neddick on the 5th, with two vanguard PALM WARBLERS being found on Hunter Road in Freeport (Delorme Map 6: C-1) on 4/7. A lone COMMON REDPOLL visited a Windham feeder on 4/4. Other new arrivals reported this week include: SNOW GOOSE, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, PIED-BILLED GREBE, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, OSPREY, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, SANDERLING, WILSON’S SNIPE, BELTED KINGFISHER, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, NORTHERN FLICKER, FISH CROW, TREE SWALLOW, WINTER WREN, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, CHIPPING SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW, SWAMP SPARROW, and EASTERN MEADOWLARK. Note: According to the April 6th Portland Press Herald, the beleaguered Scotia Prince ferry between Portland and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia will not be in operation this year. This is a definite loss to birders who like pelagic trips from stable decks! I will keep an eye out for any new developments.
