This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Please report your sightings, including your name and phone number, after this recording. This recording was updated on Thursday, February 10, 2005 with highlights that include: *LARK SPARROW*, a DOVEKIE, a WINTER WREN, SNOWY OWLS, KING EIDERS, and a BOHEMIAN WAXWING. After 1-3 inches of snow fell Thursday night, it became a very spring-like week, with high temperatures mostly in the low 40’s, over 10 degrees above normal. In fact, 51 degrees in Portland on Saturday set a new record high. That all began to change on Thursday however: winds picked up, temperatures fell, and rain turned to snow as a strong Nor’Easter roared up the coast. A very rare mid-winter *LARK SPARROW* was found at a feeder at the Scarborough Public Works building on 2/5, and continues through 2/9. From US Rte 1 in Scarborough, turn onto Lincoln St. (Opposite the Haigis Parkway that heads over to I-295). At the end, make a left onto Washington. Proceed about ½ mile to the parking lot for the Public Works building on your left, as you round the curve. The feeders are near the entrance door to the building. The Perkin’s Cove MANDARIN DUCK in Ogunquit continues to impress, while 6 GREATER SCAUP are now hanging out at Willard Beach in South Portland (Delorme Map 73: F-5). The 2nd winter KING EIDER continues in Wells Harbor, as does the adult male at the Cliff House in Ogunquit. 15 BARROW’S GOLDENEYES were at Winslow Park in South Freeport (Delorme Map 6: D-1) this week, while another was off the parking lot for Fort Baldwin in Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg on the 9th. While BALD EAGLES are frequently seen in the lower Casco Bay in winter, 5 in view at once from Martin’s Point in Portland on the 5th (Delorme Map 72: D-3) was impressive. One ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was on Cousin’s Island in Yarmouth on 2/5. A single MERLIN was at Bug Light Park in South Portland on the 4th (Delorme Map 73: E-4), with another at Laudholm Farms in Wells that same day. 13 DUNLIN were off Mackworth Island in Falmouth on 2/4. ICELAND GULLS of various ages were rather numerous this week. Many individuals are now hanging around the Portland Harbor Area, with birds seen this week from Bug Light in South Portland (high: 3 on 2/4), Willard Beach in South Portland (2 on 2/4), the Eastern Promenade in Portland (high: 3 on 2/6), as well as the harbor itself. One adult Iceland passed by Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on the 10th. At least one GLAUCOUS GULL is hanging out in the same area as well. A DOVEKIE was spotted off the Cliff House in Ogunquit on 2/4. Meanwhile, THICK-BILLED MURRES continue in nearshore waters: 1-2 were off Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth on the 6th, one was in Wells Harbor on the 6th, one was off Portland Head Light in South Portland on the 7th, 3 were off Pine Point in Scarborough on the 8th, and one was in Portland Harbor on the 9th. A SNOWY OWL was spotted on the ice between Mackworth Island in Falmouth and Great Diamond Island to the east on the 4th. Meanwhile, the Snowy at the Portland Jetport continued this week, more often frustrating rather than rewarding observers however. A SHORT-EARED OWL was near Seavey’s Landing in Scarborough Marsh on the 5th. RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS were noted from yards in Brunswick, Saco, Hollis, Freeport, and Yarmouth this week. NOTHERN SHRIKES was spotted at Laudholm Farms in Wells on 2/4, Popham Beach State Park on 2/5, and at the Portland Jetport on the 5th, while two were at Biddeford Pool on 2/5.
