This recording was updated on Thursday, December 23, 2004 with highlights that include: a WESTERN TANAGER, continuing CANVASBACKS and KING EIDER, a PACIFIC LOON, continuing "WESTERN" WILLET, SNOWY OWLS, more RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, and a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT. It was a very active weather pattern this week, but the most significant precipitation event was an offshore low that spun 2-4 inches of snow onshore Sunday night and Monday. Bitter cold air followed in behind it (Minus 2 F. in Portland on Tuesday am) before a warm front on Thursday thawed us out a bit - for now. We are in the midst of the Christmas Count Season, and a number of great birds are often found at this time of year. Also, as cold and snow set in, you never know what might show up at a feeder. This week was no exception. On 12/17 a *WESTERN TANAGER* showed up in a Georgetown backyard, where it continues as of the 22nd, feeding on sunflower seeds, fruit, and suet. A photo can be seen at www.yarmouthbirds.com/maine_rarities.asp. This yard also hosted a NORTHERN GOSHAWK and NORTHERN SHRIKE this week! The Greater Portland Christmas Bird Count was conducted on Saturday the 18th and tallied 89, plus 4 count-week, species. New high counts were set for HOODED MERGANSER (33), GREAT HORNED OWL (7), PILEATED WOODPECKER (4), WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCH (60), CAROLINA WREN (4), AMERICAN ROBIN (217, shattering the old high of 45), and SONG SPARROW (84). 134 NORTHERN CARDINALS, 6 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, and 4 COMMON RAVENS tied record highs. Other noteworthy sightings are included below. The two drake CANVASBACKS vacated Prout's Pond as it froze over, but were refound on the Portland CBC at nearby Grondin Pond (off Clearwater Ave, Scarborough, Delorme Map 3:B-4). Meanwhile, a drake KING EIDER continues at the Cliff House in Ogunquit. A PACIFIC LOON was off Dyer Point, Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: B-5) late in the day on the Greater Portland CBC, maybe the same bird seen earlier at nearby Trundy Point reported as a possible Pacific/Arctic. A "WESTERN" WILLET continues in and around the Pine Point Narrows in Scarborough. The 1st winter ICELAND GULL continues at the Pine Point Narrows dredge spoils, while the reliable adult Iceland returned to Willard Beach in South Portland on the 20th (Delorme Map73: F-5), with an additional first winter bird at Mill Creek Cove in South Portland on the 22nd and 23rd. The first GLAUCOUS GULL of the season, a first winter bird, was found at East End Beach in Portland on the CBC. A SNOWY OWL was at Willard Beach in South Portland on the 19th, and two others were found on Appledore Island off Kittery, Maine (Delorme Map 1: D-5) on New Hampshire's Isle of Shoals Christmas Bird Count. Meanwhile, a NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was heard near the parking area on the north side of Eastern Road in Scarborough Marsh on the CBC. 15 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS were noted this week, including four on the Portland CBC, while a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER lingered in a yard on Sawyer Road in Cape Elizabeth long enough to provide Portland CBC's second count record. An immature NORTHERN SHRIKE was found on the Sprague Estate in Cape Elizabeth on the Portland CBC. An AMERICAN PIPIT at Scarborough Beach State Park was the 2nd Portland CBC record. A YELLOW-BREATED CHAT was found at Gilsland Farm, Falmouth on the CBC. It was seen at the far corner of the North Meadow in and near the row of Blue Spruces by the viewing blind through the 21st at least. Also, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER has been visiting a feeder at Pine Point in Scarborough all week. A late FOX SPARROW visited a North Berwick feeder on the 17th, and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR was over Scarborough Beach State Park during the CBC. Five COMMON REDPOLLS were noted on the Portland CBC: one over Portland's Eastern Promenade and 4 on Richmond Island, Cape Elizabeth.
