This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the second edition of the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert. This recording was updated on Friday, August 20, 2004. As is typical at this time of year, shorebirds dominated the reports. Unfortunately, very few observations of juvenile shorebirds were received. In fact, observers who aged flocks of shorebirds, especially the most common SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, were finding an average of only 1-2% juvenile birds in the flocks. Troubling. Relatively cool and moist air delivered by mostly light southerly winds and cloudy conditions was the predominant weather feature for the week. Three RED-NECKED GREBES passed by the Lobster Shack at Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme: Map 3, B-5) on the 15th. Over 200 WILSON’S STORM PETRELS were in Saco Bay (Delorme: Map 3, B3-C3), while 51 were tallied from Dyer Point on the 15th. 2 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were off of Prout’s Neck in Scarborough (Delorme: Map 3, B-4) on the 16th. Up to 6 HUDSONIAN GODWITS were noted around Biddeford Pool on multiple dates this week. 8 WHIMBREL were behind Hattie’s Deli at Biddeford Pool on the 15th, along with 2 adult RED KNOTS. Sifting through flocks of peeps produced 1 juvenile WESTERN SANDPIPER at Fortunes Rock Beach, Biddeford and 2 adults and 2 juveniles at Back Cove in Portland on the 16th One juvenile remained there on the 18th as well, and an additional juvenile was at Wells Harbor the same day. Very early were single PURPLE SANDPIPERS at Biddeford Pool Beach on the 15th, and at Crescent Beach State Park on the 19th. Other high counts for shorebirds included: 100+ SEMIPALMATED PLOVER (all adult) at Scarborough Beach State Park on the 19th. 1000+ SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS on the North end of Biddeford Pool Beach on the 15th and 850 at Back Cove in Portland on the 16th, both with only 1-2% juvenile birds. 20 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were at the Biddeford Pool Beach on the 15th . A 2nd year LITTLE GULL was in a flock of about 200 BONAPARTE’S GULLS off Prout’s Neck in Scarborough on the 16th. A 2nd year BLACK-HEADED GULL was discovered in York Harbor, feeding in the surf and resting at a nearby retention pond on 8/15 (Delorme: Map 1, B-5). 15 ROSEATE and a single juvenile BLACK TERN were at Hills Beach in Biddeford on the 15th while 2 juvenile ARCTIC TERNS cruised by Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth the same day. Two male BLUE-WINGED WARBLERS were at Hinckley Park, South Portland (Delorme: Map 3 A-4). One PRAIRIE WARBLER was observed at Crescent Beach State Park in Scarborough on the 19th, while one LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH was studied in Gray on the 18th at the intersections of North Raymond and Shaker Rds. (Delorme: Map 5, C-4) SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS continue to be observed at Portland’s Back Cove at the little marsh near the soccer fields, where they were documented breeding for the first time this year.
