This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: It was a very active week of weather, including some needed soaking rains. Each day of NW winds resulted in considerable turnover of migrant shorebirds. After temps in the low 90’s inland again on Fri, a cold front that moved offshore Sat pm produced strong thunderstorms Fri pm and isolated thunderstorms Sat pm. Sun was a refreshing day with NW winds and low humidity. Rain and thunderstorms developed again on Mon (over 2” in some areas) ahead of a warm front. More heavy rain fell with a cluster of isolated thunderstorms Tues pm, followed by widespread rain Wed am and scattered thunderstorms in the pm thanks to a large low pressure system. Cooler temps and lower humidity returned on N winds on Thurs. A *RUFUOUS HUMMINGBIRD* is coming to a feeder in a private yard in Biddeford. A *SUMMER TANAGER* is being reported from a feeder in a private yard in Sanford. A pair of BLACK SCOTERS were off of Biddeford Pool Beach on 8/5. The wading bird numbers in Scarborough Marsh, especially in the salt pannes, are on the increase, with young birds fledgling from Stratton Island, along with post-breeding dispersal from elsewhere. 200 SNOWY EGRETS, 80 GLOSSY IBIS, 40 GREAT EGRETS, and 13 LITTLE BLUE HERONS were tallied on the 6th, for example. Shorebird numbers increased significantly this week, with juveniles of many species beginning to arrive. The salt pannes on the east side of the north end of the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh was once again the hotspot, with 5 adult STILT SANDPIPERS and 2 adult LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS among the multitudes on the 8/6. The following totals are from that day as well - all of which were high counts for the week: 40 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, 1200 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS, and 300 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS. 12 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and 100 LEAST SANDPIPERS were also tallied. Elsewhere, 2 pairs of PIPING PLOVER on Western Beach in Scarborough (Delorme Map 3; B-4) have each fledged 3 young each, great news as this is triple the state average! 3 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS are being seen regularly on Western Beach as well, most recently spotted on the 6th. Meanwhile, an increasingly scarce HUDSONIAN GODWIT was found at Biddeford Pool on the 5th. Away from the Eastern Rd Salt Pannes, other high counts tallied this week included: 28 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS in Biddeford Pool on 8/5; 170 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS on Pine Point/Old Orchard Beach on 8/3; 56 KILLDEER at the Wainright Farm Recreation Area in South Portland (off of the Maietta Parkway, Delorme Map 73: H-3) on 8/7; 150+ LESSER YELLOWLEGS at Brunswick’s Wharton Point (Delorme Map 6: C-3) on both 8/3 and 8/6; 5 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS at the Sanford Sewerage facility (off of Gavel Rd; Delorme Map 2: D-4) on 8/4; 17 mostly juvenile – and all “EASTERN” – WILLETS in Biddeford Pool on 8/5; 54 SANDERLINGS on Hill’s Beach on 8/5; 4 WHIMBREL at Biddeford Pool on 8/5; 260+ LEAST SANDPIPERS at the Sanford Sewerage facility on 8/4; 20 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS on Seawall Beach in Phippsburg (Delorme Map 6: E-5) on 8/4; and 5 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS off of Pine Point on 8/3. The 2nd Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth “Terns of Casco Bay aboard the Lucky Catch” trip to Outer Green Island on the 4th enjoyed a 1st Cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at the mouth of the Fore River/Portland Harbor (and likely visible from South Portland’s Bug Light Park) and this week’s high count of 100+ RUDDY TURNSTONES on Outer Green. Numerous adult and juvenile COMMON TERNS, along with multiple ROSEATE TERNS, including juveniles, were also seen. The tern festival on Biddeford’s Hill’s Beach continues, with 5 species present on 8/5. One basic-plumaged BLACK TERN and a single LEAST TERN joined 100+ COMMON TERNS, 10+ ROSEATE TERNS, 2+ ARCTIC TERNS, including juveniles of all three. 125+, including 4 juvenile, BONAPARTE’S GULLS were also present. Very rare inland, 2 LEAST TERNS were seen at the Sanford Sewerage facility on 8/4. A pair of CAROLINA WRENS were confirmed breeding when young were heard and seen being fed in a nest under a porch in a yard near the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth.
