This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: (Thurs-Sat N/A). A cold front triggered showers and thunderstorms Sat pm, but the tropical airmass remained in place through Mon night, when a second cold front pushed offshore. High pressure then built in, withtemps increasing to the low 90’s inland by Thurs on SW winds (Normal now in Portland is 79/59). An “apparent” ***LITTLE STINT*** was discovered on Seawall Beach in Phippsburg (Delorme Map 6: E-5) at high tide, near noon, on 7/31. This would constitute an overdue first state record. The bird was not relocated on 8/1. No reports, positive or negative, were received for today, 8/2. One AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER was among about 1,000 shorebirds roosting on Seawall on 8/1. Two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were off of Biddeford Pool Beach on 7/23. Two SOOTY SHEARWATERS were spotted as they passed offshore of Biddeford Pool Beach on the 23rd. A MERLIN was hunting the salt pannes of the Eastern Rd Trail on 7/31. A HUDSONIAN GODWIT was on Goose Rocks Beach in Kennebunkport (Delorme Map 3: D-2) on the 28th. A nice count of 5 STILT SANDPIPERS was made in the salt pannes on the east side of the north end of the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh on the 31st, while one was present back on the 22nd. The total of only 2 WILLETS off of Eastern Rd on the 31st was evidence that local breeders have now moved on and/or are gathering at staging areas. Other shorebird high counts this week included: 11 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS along the Eastern Promenade in Portland on 7/30; 13 GREATER YELLOWLEGS in the salt pannes along the Eastern Rd Trail on 7/31; 52 LESSER YELLOWLEGS in the salt pannes along the Eastern Rd Trail on 7/22; 5 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS along Portland’s Eastern Promenade on 7/30; 1 RUDDY TURNSTONE on Biddeford Pool Beach on 7/23; 8 SANDERLINGS and 145 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS on Biddeford Pool Beach on 7/23; 51 LEAST SANDPIPERS off of Eastern Rd on 7/22; 6 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS and 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS in the Eastern Rd salt pannes on 7/31; and 57 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS off of Eastern Rd on 7/31. A 3rd-Cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was observed feeding off of Biddeford Pool Beach on the 23rd. A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO visited a Freeport yard on 7/22, while BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS were noted more widely this week. TRAVEL: Just a few spaces remain for our second TERNS OF CASCO BAY trip aboard the Lucky Catch on Saturday, August 4th, from 4:00 to 7:00pm. We’ll enjoy hundreds of Common Terns and study the Roseates nesting among them. Our first trip also produced a large number of Black Guillemots, a Peregrine Falcon, and a Gray Seal.
