Weather Summary: Rain continued Fri am ahead of a pm cold front that triggered a few more showers and scattered thunderstorms. Beautiful weather then ensued for the weekend, with seasonable temps and low humidity as a ridge of high pressure built in. A *ROYAL TERN* was discovered on the Basket Island Sandbar at the east end of Hill’s Beach at 10:50am on the outgoing tide on 7/20. No further reports have been received. A hen GADWALL led 5 chicks up the Scarborough River, past Pine Point, on 7/20. The local pair of AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were off of Pine Point on the 20th. Three adult STILT SANDPIPERS were in the salt pannes on the east side of the north end of the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh on 7/20, and the first SOLITARY SANDPIPER of the fall was behind the Clambake Restaurant along Pine Point Rd in Scarborough Marsh on the same date. Shorebird numbers have increased considerably. Other shorebird high counts this week, from the mainland, included: 1 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and 18 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS at Pine Point on 7/22; 5 GREATER YELLOWLEGS in the Eastern Rd Trail salt pannes on 7/20, 20 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 61 WILLETS, 6 WHIMBREL (with 4 still present on 7/22) off Pine Point on 7/20, 1 RUDDTY TURNSTONE off Pine Pt on 7/22; 2 SANDERLINGS and 180 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS off of Pine Point on 7/20; 150+ LEAST SANDPIPERS in the Eastern Rd Trail salt pannes on 7/20; and 125 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS off of Pine Point on 7/20. The CAROLINA WRENS are still being seen, although sporadically, at and near the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth. Two SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS continue at Portland’s Back Cove. TRAVEL: Join us for out second TERNS OF CASCO BAY trip aboard the Lucky Catch on Saturday, August 4th, from 4:00 to 7:00pm.
