This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: An unusually strong northern jet stream resulted in a very active week of weather. A cold front on Fri produced isolated thunderstorms, while a stronger one produced strong thunderstorms Sun pm, that included up to 1.5” of rain. A pair of low pressure systems then produced showers throughout the day on Wed, fog and drizzle Thurs am, and more showers and isolated thunderstorms for the pm. Most days this week saw cooler than normal high temps (normal in Portland is now 79/59). A *WHITE-WINGED DOVE* graced a Cumberland feeder very sporadically between 7/14 and 7/16. An immature *YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON* was found behind the Clambake Restaurant on Pine Point Rd in Scarborough on 7/18. This is almost surely the individual that has been spending the summer on Stratton Island. The pair of MUTE SWANS in Legion’s Pond in Kittery (at the corner of Rte 103 and Paul Street; Delorme Map 1: B-3) are escorting two cygnets. The first ½ Day Pelagic birding trip out of Portland, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth and See-Life Paulagics on 7/14 produced 1 WHITE-WINGED SCOTER (in Casco Bay between Spring Point and Bug Lights), 50-60 COMMON LOONS, 8-9 NORTHERN FULMAR, about 50 GREATER SHEARWATERS, 20+ SOOTY SHEARWATERS, about 200 WILSON’S STORM-PETRELS, 50+ NORTHERN GANNETS, 2 ROSEATE TERNS, 100’s of COMMON TERNS, about 30 BLACK GUILLEMOTS, and 1 adult ATLANTIC PUFFIN. An immature PACIFIC LOON was seen in the Pine Point Narrows between Pine Point and Prout’s Neck (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on the 12th. This is quite likely the same individual that was seen earlier this summer in the southern end of Saco Bay. A good concentration of wading birds off Scarborough Pine Point on 7/15 included 3 GREAT BLUE HERONS, 31 GREAT EGRETS, 69 SNOWY EGRETS, 2 LITTLE BLUE HERONS, and a goodly 18 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS. One AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER flew by Biddeford’s Hill’s Beach (Delorme Map 3: C-3) on the 15th and a single STILT SANDPIPER continues in the salt pannes on the east side of the north end of the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh as of the 17th. Other shorebird high counts this week, from the mainland, included: 16 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and 18 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS at Hill’s Beach on 7/15; 5 GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 30 LESSER YELLOWLEGS at Wharton Point in Brunswick (Delorme Map 6; C-3) on 7/16; one WHIMBREL, 8 SANDERLINGS, and 23 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS on Hill’s Beach on 7/15; 5 LEAST SANDPIPERS in Jones Creek in Scarborough Marsh on 7/16; 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER in the Eastern Rd Trail salt pannes on 7/17; and 49 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS on Hill’s Beach on 7/15. For the second time in the past three years, a SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROW was confirmed nesting in Portland’s Back Cove – behind the playing fields – when an adult was observed carrying food on the 16th. Meanwhile, the SEASIDE SPARROW continues in Scarborough Marsh. A single EVENING GROSBEAK was heard as it flew over the intersection of Verril and Elmwood Rds in Pownal on 7/13.
