Weather Summary: N/A. WILSON’S STORM-PETRELS are increasing along the southcoast. “Dozens” were reported off of Goose Rocks Beach (Delorme Map 3: D-2) on 7/5, and 25+ were tallied off Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on 7/9. Large numbers have been seen farther out in Saco Bay this week. A MERLIN was spotted over Goose Rocks Beach on the 5th, and one zipped through South Portland’s Bug Light Park (Delorme Map 3: A-5) on the 12th. Shorebird numbers were up considerably this week. One adult STILT SANDPIPER was in the salt pannes on the east side of the north end of the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh on 7/9. A second bird joined it by 7/11. 8+ BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, ~150 WILLET, 3 WHIMBREL, 20+ RUDDY TURNSTONES, and ~100 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS were tallied from Stratton Island in the “last couple of evenings,” as reported on the 12th. Other shorebird high counts this week, from the mainland, included: 22 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS at Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg on 7/12; 112 LESSER YELLOWLEGS in the Eastern Rd Trail salt pannes on 7/9; 45 GREATER YELLOWLEGS in Phippsburg’s Atkin’s Bay (Delorme Map 6: E-5) on 7/6; single WHIMBRELS on Georgetown’s Seawall Beach (Delorme Map 6: E-2) and Atkin’s Bay on 7/6; 38 LEAST SANDPIPERS in the Eastern Rd salt pannes on 7/11, 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER in Maquoit Bay on 7/11, and 1 PECTORAL SANDPIPER and 35 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS in the Eastern Rd salt pannes on both 7/9 and 7/11. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER flew over Hinckley Park in South Portland (off Highland Rd; Delorme Map 73; G-4) on the 12th. Two FISH CROWS visiting the fast food joints on Rte 302 in Windham (Delorme Map 5: C-2) on 7/6, further suggests a new colony nearby. The SEASIDE SPARROW continues in Scarborough Marsh this week.
