This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: Pleasantly cool, below normal temps (normal in Portland is now 78/58F), and dry air on a NW flow Fri through Mon was a welcome relief. A series of weak shortwaves produced a few light showers Sun and Mon. A low to our west produced much-needed rain Wed pm and Thurs am as a warm front pushed through, and more showers and thunderstorms in the pm ahead of a trailing cold front. Two SURF and three WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were off Laudholm Beach on 7/1. A LEAST BITTERN was described from Portland’s Capisic Pond Park on the 2nd. No further reports, positive or negative, have been received. The two AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS spotted at the Cape Porpoise pier (Delorme Map 3: D-2) on 7/1 were most likely the pair that has been seen regularly nearby in the vicinity of the Vaughn Island Preserve of Kennebunkport. One GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 5 LESSER YELLOWLEGS were in the salt pannes off of Harbor Rd in Wells (Delorme Map 2: E-1) on the 1st, while the salt pannes on the northeast side of the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh yielded 1 GREATER and 16 LESSER YELLOWLEGS, 11 LEAST SANDPIPERS, and 12 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS on the 4th. Meanwhile, three southbound HUDSONIAN GODWITS were spotted behind Half-Mile Beach in Georgetown’s Reid State Park on 6/30. The pair of CAROLINA WRENS continue here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth. A single EVENING GROSBEAK passed over Freeport’s Hedgehog Mountain Park (off of Pownal Rd; Delorme Map 6: C-1) on 7/1.
