This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. All locations not found in A Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of current and past reports can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com. Weather Summary: After sunny days on Fri and Sat (finally!) with warm temps (cooler along the coast), scattered showers and thunderstorms (locally strong) developed on Sun ahead of a pm cold front. Another cold front Wed pm produced showers throughout the day. Temps were appropriately above normal (upper 70’s, normal high in Portland is 74) on the Thursday, the first day of summer, ahead of an approaching evening cold front. Reports were received of a **BROWN PELICAN** seen in the north side of Casco Bay on 6/17. The bird(s) was seen off of Sisters Island in Freeport (southwest of Merepoint; Delorme Map 6: D-2) and off Snow Island in Harpswell’s Quahog Bay (Delorme Map 6: D-4). No further reports have been received. Two drake and one hen LONG-TAILED DUCKS are lingering off of Phippsburg’s Hermit Island (Delorme Map 6: E-4), as observed daily 6/19-6/21. Five RED-THROATED LOONS were off of Seawall Beach in Phippsburg (Delorme Map 6: E-5) on the 18th. WILSON’S STORM-PETRELS are now increasing offshore. NORTHERN GANNETS have been plentiful along the coast, with a high of 500+ spotted from Hermit Island on the 18th and 19th. One LITTLE BLUE HERON was at Hermit Island on 6/19, north of their usual range. A pair of PEREGRINE FALCONS appear to be breeding under the Casco Bay Bridge between Portland and South Portland (Rte 77; Delorme Map 73: F-4), and can often be observed roosting from the small park at the end of Waterman St in South Portland. Two AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were at Vines Landing in Biddeford Pool on 6/18, and a single was off of Pine Point in Scarborough on 6/20. One LESSER YELLOWLEGS and 2 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were in the salt pannes on the northeast side of the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh on the 21st. 5 UPLAND SANDPIPERS were observed at the Kennebunk Plains on the 20th. A 1st Cycle LITTLE GULL continues – at least sporadically - at Hill’s Beach in Biddeford, seen again on the incoming tide on the morning of 6/18, along with 120 BONAPARTE’S GULLS. Subsequent searches have failed so far to relocate the bird, however. A pair of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS have been observed carrying food (chunks of suet) daily in a Cape Elizabeth yard along Sawyer Rd, and on the 21st showed up at the feeders with two juveniles. Meanwhile, a pair also continues in yards on Cousin’s Island in Yarmouth. Away from known colonies and their respective feeding ranges, FISH CROWS are few and far between in the summer, so singles near the Maine Mall on 6/16 and at Biddeford Pool on 6/18 seem worth mentioning. The pair of CAROLINA WRENS continue at and near the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth, one continues at Hermit Island in Phippsburg, and one has been visiting a Cape Elizabeth yard for about a week and a half now. 13 PRAIRIE WARBLERS were tallied in the high-tension powerline cut from Sweetser Rd past Fickett Rd in Pownal (Delorme Map 5: B-5) on 6/17, while a tardy MOURNING WARBLER was singing in a West Bath yard on the same day. A SEASIDE SPARROW was discovered singing in Scarborough Marsh, in the lower Mill Brook area, on the 21st. 7 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS flew over the high-tension powerline cut in Pownal, just northeast of Fickett Rd on the 17th, while and EVENING GROSBEAK passed through the Hills Beach neighborhood of Biddeford on the 18th.
