This recording was updated on Thursday, November 18, 2004 with highlights that include: continuing PACIFIC LOON, more RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, DICKCISSELS, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL. NOTE: Eastern Road in Scarborough Marsh is now open. The new bridge provides a great overview for scanning the marsh for waterfowl and raptors! A cold front passed through on Thursday night. A coastal low moved up the coast, just brushing our area Friday night and Saturday, producing some light snow along the coast. This first snowfall was only a few days earlier than the long-term average. High pressure then built in behind it on Saturday and remained in control through week's end. Bird, and birder, activity has definitely thinned out with the cold weather this week, but waterfowl are building and some winter finches are arriving to keep things interesting. The PACIFIC LOON continues in the channel between Prout's Neck and Pine Point in Scarborough. On the 14th, it was seen from the jetty at Pine Point Beach, and on the 15th it was spotted from the marina/fisherman's co-op at Pine Pt. On the 14th, it was among a large assemblage of waterbirds that included 300+ RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, 58 HORNED GREBES, and 42 RED-NECKED GREBES. 54 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS at Pine Point on 11/14 was a good mid-November count, as was 20 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS there the next day. A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER was at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth on the 16th. 1st winter ICELAND GULLS were noted at The Nubble on the 14th, and at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth the next day. A SHORT-EARED OWL was spotted in Cape Neddick on 11/15. RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS continue their impressive showing. New birds this week were seen in yards in Windham on the 12th, Yarmouth on the 13th, and Topsham on the 14th. Individuals continued in yards in York, Windham, South Freeport, and Falmouth. A late EASTERN PHOEBE was at the Midcoast Hospital in Brunswick on 11/15. NORTHERN SHRIKES were exciting "yard birds" in Topsham on the 14th and Georgetown on the 16th. The pair of CAROLINA WRENS continue to visit the feeders of the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth daily. However, they seem to do a great job of remaining out of sight whenever birders are here waiting for them! A BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER visited a yard in Brunswick on the 11th, while a male COMMON YELLOWTHROAT was along the southwest stretch of Commercial Street in Portland (Delorme Map 73: F-3) on the 15th. "IPSWICH" SAVANNAH SPARROWS were noted from a number of coastal locations this week. An immature male DICKCISSEL continued at the Gilsland Farm, Falmouth feeders at least through 11/13, while the immature male at Portland's Dragon Field also remains. Hopefully a sign of things to come, a single WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL flew over Wolfe's Neck State Park in Freeport (Delorme Map 6: D-1) on the 16th and 3 COMMON REDPOLLS passed over a Falmouth yard on the 17th.
