This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: It was a very active – and very wet – week of weather. A frontal boundary stalled over the region Fri through Mon. Instability produced scattered showers and drizzle (and thunderstorms on Sat that produced hail and strong winds) through Sun. Temps and wind direction varied depending on which side of the front we were on, with high temps in the mid to upper 70’s on southerly winds Fri and Sat, and then on its cool side for Sun through Tues with temps in the 50’s on easterly winds. The remnants of Tropical Storm Barry then merged with a low to our west, and dropped up to 2” of rain Sun night through Tues am. A cold front Tues night – which produced more rain and thunderstorms – finally cleared things out for Wed and Thurs on westerly winds. A bird described as what could only have been a male *PAINTED BUNTING* was reported from a Yarmouth yard last week. It has not been seen again. A most impressive 6 *ACADIAN FLYCATCHERS* were banded on Appledore Island 5/30-6/1. With another on Monhegan Island on 6/3, mainland birders should keep their eyes – and ears – open! A good total, for this late of a date, was 32 BRANT on Laudholm Beach on 6/3. A TRICOLORED HERON continued this week along the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh, being joined by a second on the 2nd. A MERLIN buzzed through Laudholm Beach on 6/1. A lone RED KNOT was on Ferry Beach in Scarborough (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on the 3rd, with three present there the next day. Two late WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS were on Laudholm Beach on the 5th. At least 10 ROSEATE TERNS joined 150+ COMMON TERNS in a feeding frenzy in Pepperell Cove, off of the Kittery Town Landing (Delorme Map 1: C-4) on 6/3, while a single BLACK TERN was observed at the mouth of the Little River on Laudholm Beach on 6/1. A YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO was found at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester (Delorme Map 5: C-4) on the 2nd. One lucky birder stopped to walk his dog at the northbound Kennebunk Service Area on the Maine Turnpike on 6/2, only to spot an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER in the wetland on the other side of the access road. Two YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS were found at Portland’s Evergreen Cemetery on 6/3, three were detected on Bailey Island on the same day, and one was at Scarborough’s Fuller Farm (off of Broadturn Rd; Delorme Map 2: A-2) on 6/5. A CAROLINA WREN continues in the neighborhood near the Nubble in Cape Neddick, as does the pair here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth. Still on the move, a SWAINSON’S THRUSH was observed along the Cutts Island Trail in Kittery (off of Seapoint Rd; Delorme Map 1: B-4) on the 3rd. A BLUE-WINGED WARBLER was discovered at the Trolley Museum along Log Cabin Rd in Kennebunkport (Delorme Map 3: D-2) on 5/31, another was found along North Rd in North Yarmouth, 1.2 miles south of Rte 231 (Delorme Map 5: C-5) on 6/3, and one was at Fuller Farm in Scarborough on 6/5. While PRAIRIE WARBLERS can be locally common in proper habitat – as mentioned before in this transcript, a tally of 14 singing males along a high-tension powerline cut between Chadsey and Sweetser Rds in Pownal (Delorme Map 5: C-5) on 6/5 was surprising. A sign that warbler migration continues was a report of 24 AMERICAN REDSTARTS and a very late NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH on Appledore Island on 6/3. Other tardy migrant WARBLERS included single MAGNOLIAS at Fort Foster and Seapoint Beach in Kittery on 6/3, a BLACKPOLL at Kittery’s Fort McClary (Delorme Map 1: B-4) on 6/3. A MOURNING WARBLER continued at Evergreen Cemetery through 6/1, one was found near the Driftwood Inn on Bailey Island (Delorme Map 6: E-3) on 6/3, and one was at Laudholm Farm (Wells Reserve) in Wells on 6/5. A single SEASIDE SPARROW was discovered singing in Scarborough Marsh on the 3rd. Follow the dirt road (past the chain) from the end of Libby Rd in the Scarborough Industrial Park complex (off of Rte 1/9; Delorme Map 3: B-3). The bird was seen well out into the marsh, towards the Scarborough River, but the observer reported that it may be audible – or even seen, with a scope – from dry land at the marsh’s edge. No further reports, positive or negative, were received however. A truant WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW was found at Portland’s Dragon Field on the 2nd. A female BLUE GROSBEAK was on Appledore Island on 6/3. At least one male and one female ORCHARD ORIOLE continue at Capisic Pond Park in Portland this week. TRAVEL: Only a few spaces remain for our June 23rd (7-10am) TERNS OF CASCO BAY trip aboard the Lucky Catch. We’ll enjoy hundreds of Common Terns and study the Roseates nesting among them. We’ll look for other areas denizens, such as Black Guillemots, and lingering species such as Great Cormorant - and we’ll certainly have an eye out for rarities! This is not a “hard-core” pelagic trip by any means, but more of a “birdwalk by boat” pace.
