This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. All locations not found in A Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of current and past reports can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com. Weather Summary: Westerly winds as high pressure continued pumped in record heat for Fri. (The high of 92 in Portland broke the old record of 88, was 26 degrees above normal, and was the second highest temp ever recorded in May). A dry cold front overnight reduced temps about 10 degrees for Sat, but still well above normal. A cold front Mon that produced showers Sun night and early Mon am also cooled us off slightly, but temps remained above normal, with highs mostly in the mid to upper 70’s (normal in Portland for today is 68/49) through Wed. A cold front Wed night produced scattered showers through Thurs, as the frontal boundary stalled just to our south. Otherwise, the last trickles of northbound passerines proceeded unimpeded on most nights. A *WHITE-EYED VIREO* was banded on Outer Green Island on 5/25. Two MUTE SWANS dropped by Mill Cove in South Portland on the 25th. Freeport’s Florida Lake Park (off of Rte 125; Delorme Map 6: C-1) continues to host two lingering drake RING-NECKED DUCKS, through at least 5/29. A TRICOLORED HERON was found in the salt pannes along the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh on the 30th. A pair of RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS are breeding in Pownal’s Bradbury Mountain State Park, with one of the adults spotted from the summit on 5/29. . 5 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS were roosting behind Hattie’s Deli at Biddeford Pool on the 28th. 5+ UPLAND SANDPIPERS were detected at the Kennebunk Plains on 5/28, while two RED KNOTS visited Outer Green Island on 5/26. BLACK-BILLED CUCKOOS began to trickle in, with one arriving at Portland’s Evergreen Cemetery on 5/27, with a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO reported from a Berwick yard on 5/25. A very impressive 100 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were tallied over a Cape Neddick yard between 8:10 and 8:30pm on the 27th, with smaller numbers spotted overhead in many other locations throughout the week. Evergreen Cemetery hosted an OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER on 5/25, single YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS on 5/25 and 5/28, but a nice count of 4 on 5/31. An Olive-sided Flycatcher was at Portland’s Dragon Field on 5/31 as well. ALDER FLYCATCHERS began to arrive on territory this week, as did the relatively few WILLOW FLYCATCHERS scattered about the area. Single CAROLINA WRENS were singing in the village of Five Islands in Georgetown and one continues at Phippsburg Hermit Island. Meanwhile, the pair continues here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth. Flocks of CEDAR WAXWINGS are returning to the area, and were widely observed and reported this week. Away from Kennebunk Plains, were 15+ were recorded on 5/28, PRAIRIE WARBLERS are rather local around the area, but powerline cuts can provide excellent habitat. For example, at least two are singing in a powerline cut along Old Bath Rd (Delorme Map 6: B-4) in Brunswick. Two MOURNING WARBLERS were on Outer Green Island on 5/25, a female was identified at Portland’s Capisic Pond Park on 5/28, with a male at Evergreen Cemetery on 5/30. Quite possibly the same male was still there the next day, along with a respectable May 31st total of 13 species, led by 20+ AMERICAN REDSTARTS and 15+ BLACKPOLL WARBLERS. 20+ VESPER SPARROWS and 2 GRASSHOPPER SPARROWS were recorded in the Kennebunk Plains on the 28th. SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS have begun to return to the marsh at Popham Beach State Park, NELSON’S SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS are back at Reid State Park in Georgetown, and both are increasing in Scarborough Marsh. A little late, a LINCOLN’S SPARROW was noted at Evergreen Cemetery on the 31st. One adult male and one immature male ORCHARD ORIOLES continue at Capisic Pond Park.
