Hotline: Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert (Internet Only).
Date: Thursday, May 24, 2007 compiled at: 5:45pm.
    To report: (207) 846-8002, or wbcbirds_AT_yarmouthbirds_dot_com.
Coverage: York, Cumberland, and Sagadahoc Counties.

This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. All locations not found in A Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of current and past reports can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com.

Weather Summary: A coastal low spread rain - which fell heavy at times - into the area on Fri, with scattered showers and periods of drizzle continuing through early Mon morning, with NE winds and temps up to 15F below normal. High pressure then built in for Mon through week’s end, with temps soaring to 90 inland (Sanford) on SW winds by Thurs (much cooler along on the coast where afternoon seabreezes developed) Clear and calm nights allowed for a steady procession of migrants. It was a great week of birding – look at all of those “upper-case” birds and asterixes in the species list!

A ***BOAT-TAILED GRACKLE*** was reported from Fort Foster in Kittery on 5/19. The bird was seen near the “fortifications at the end of the road in a wooded area.” No further details, or additional reports – positive or negative – were received.

A *KENTUCKY WARBLER* was discovered on Hermit Island in Phippsburg (Delorme Map 6: E-4) on 5/19, but it has not been reported since. The excellent directions that were provided were: “ Walk out main road from campground office north toward Hermit I Harbor. After passing Cross Island Road, look for "major lumber operation" on the right, adjacent to the campsite's dock. Watch for sign "Drive Slowly" on rite. Keep going until you see a small olive green pump house on the right. Across the road from the pumphouse, you'll see a black water pipe snaking thru the woods. The bird was south of this water pipe, seeming to favor the area around a small knoll with a few small spruce trees growing from its top.”

A *YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD* was reported from a Maine DOT reclamation site off of Sawyer Rd in Scarborough on either 5/19 or 20. No further details were available.

A female-type * RUFF* (“REEVE”) was discovered in the marsh along the Atlantic Way Trail (a section of the Rachel Carson NWR) off of Route 9 (Seaside Rd) in the Kinney Shores section of Saco on 5/19 (Delorme Map 3: C-3). The trail is accessible from a pull-off on the west side of the road, about ¼ mile south of Goosefare Brook (the border of Saco and Old Orchard Beach), where it was also occasionally seen. The last observation was made at 7:30am at Goosefare Brook on 5/21.

A *WHITE-EYED VIREO* was observed at Hinckley Park in South Portland (off of Highland Rd; Delorme Map 73: G-4) on 5/20. It was probably seen there on 5/16, but it was not confirmed. The bird has not been seen again.

A drake GADWALL continues behind the Clambake Restaurant in Scarborough Marsh on the 21st.

1-2 LEACH’S STORM-PETRELS were seen off of Outer Green Island overnight on 5/23-24.

Two lingering GREAT CORMORANTS are being seen off of Outer Green Island.

The Inaugural Bradbury Mountain Spring Hawkwatch, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth (www.yarmouthbirds.com/hawkwatch.asp) came to an end on 5/20, with only 2 birds recorded in the last 4 days (1 ¾ of those days lost to rain). The season total of 2,123 migrants was composed of 1 BLACK VULTURE, 70 TURKEY VULTURES, 288 OSPREYS, 38 BALD EAGLES, 48 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 415 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 25 COOPER’S HAWKS, 4 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, 29 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 805 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 178 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 3 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 175 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 25 MERLINS, 1 PEREGRINE FALCON, and 18 Unidentified.

Elsewhere, a MERLIN buzzed a Cape Neddick yard on the 23rd, while a PEREGRINE FALCON is visiting Outer Green Island, and 2 were in Scarborough Marsh on the 21st.

200+ BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were tallied on Seawall Beach in Phippsburg on 5/19.

Two RED KNOTS were off Pine Point in Scarborough Marsh on the 21st, while 25 PURPLE SANDPIPERS are lingering off of Outer Green Island.

A male WILSON’S PHALAROPE was on the marsh side of Pine Point in Scarborough Marsh on the 19th and 20th, while a female was observed in the salt pannes on the northeast side of the Eastern Rd Trail through the marsh on the 24th.

LEAST TERNS were returning this week, while a BLACK TERN was seen off of Outer Green Island this week.

The first few COMMON NIGHTHAWK reports of the season were received this week.

A pair of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS have been frequenting a Cape Elizabeth yard for the past week or so, one continues in a Portland yard, and one visited a Berwick yard on 5/22.

An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was reported from Clifford Park in Biddeford (off of Rte 9/208; Delorme Map 3: C-2) on the same day, while the first YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER arrived at Freeport’s Hedgehog Mountain Park (off of Pownal Rd; Delorme Map 6: C-1) on the 24th.

Single PHILADELPHIA VIREOS were found at Brown’s Pt in Bowdoinham (Delorme Map 6: A-4) on 5/19; Fort Foster in Kittery on 5/21; and Evergreen Cemetery on 5/23.

Two CAROLINA WRENS are now frequenting a Portland neighborhood, the pair continues here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth, one continues at Hermit Island in Phippsburg, and one returned to a South Freeport yard this week.

A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was on Outer Green Island on 5/24, with an estimated 300 SWAINSON’S THRUSHES heard passing overhead overnight.

15-18 species of WARBLERS were noted at numerous locations this week. The high count however, as usual, came from Evergreen Cemetery on the 22nd, when 21 species were tallied including newly arrived TENNESSEE, one PRAIRIE, a very good total of 25+ CANADA, but MAGNOLIAS dominated.

A Berwick yard hosted a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER and a “BREWSTER’S” WARBLER on 5/19. Very rare in spring, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was found at the Morse Mountain Preserve in Phippsburg (Delorme Map 6: E-5) on 5/19. Single CAPE MAY WARBLERS were seen in Evergreen on 5/17, Kittery’s Fort Foster on 5/21, Single MOURNING WARBLERS were noted in a Berwick yard on 5/17 and in Portland’s Capisic Pond Park on 5/23.

The cool, wet weather this weekend continued to drive numerous migrants (especially GRAY CATBIRDS, SCARLET TANAGERS, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS, and INDIGO BUNTINGS) to backyard feeding stations through the area. Some of the highest totals included a West Kennebunk yard with 9 Scarlet Tanagers, 6 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, and 20+ Baltimore Orioles on 5/18. 13 Baltimores were tallied in a Cape Elizabeth yard on 5/19, and at least 14 males alone – and 12 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks - in a Windham yard on 5/21. Meanwhile, 15-20 Scarlet Tanagers were reported from Kittery’s Fort Foster on 5/21.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was discovered in the Kennebunk Plains, on the opposite side of Maguire Rd from the electrical substation on the 20th. The first few SALTMARSH SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS have returned to Scarborough Marsh by the 21st, while a single NELSON’S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW was in the marsh at Phippsburg Popham Beach State Park by the same date.

One adult male and one immature male ORCHARD ORIOLE were seen at Portland’s Capisic Pond Park on the 17th. A female was frequenting a Cumberland yard from the 17th through at least the 19th, and a female is visiting a Cape Elizabeth yard as well.
