This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: High pressure remained in control through Thurs with well above normal temps (into the mid 80's inland on Wed and Thurs). A cold front Fri pm produced showers and thunderstorms earlier in the day. High pressure then returned for the weekend, with a cooler NW flow through Mon. Much-needed substantial rains then began with showers behind a warm front Tues am. A pair of low pressure systems then produced periods of rain, drizzle, and even a few thunderstorms Tues pm through early Thurs, with onshore winds through Thurs, with unseasonable cool temps. Lows on Thurs were in the upper 30’s, while daily highs struggled to reach 50F (normal in Portland for today is 64/45F). Migrants were really on the move this week, and cold weather and early-morning rain grounded many of them, producing great birding at a number of favored migrant “traps.” A female *PROTHONATORY WARBLER* and a male CAPE MAY WARBLER were reported among a cumulative total of 17 species of warblers at Hinckley Park in South Portland (off of Highland Rd; Delorme Map 73: G-4) on 5/17, which also included an impressive 20+ BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS. A “one-day-wonder” immature male SUMMER TANAGER put in an appearance in a Lyman yard on 5/16. A female *HOODED WARBLER* was discovered at the edge of the main ponds at Portland’s Evergreen Cemetery on 5/16. 5+ lingering BRANT were noted on a trip to Appledore Island 5/12-13, which also yielded 1 COMMON RAVEN, 1 CAROLINA WREN, 1 PRAIRIE WARBLER, and 1 female ORCHARD ORIOLE. A TRICOLORED HERON was spotted in flight over Saco Bay on the 16th, apparently heading towards Scarborough Marsh. Elsewhere, a MERLIN was spotted over the Eastern Rd section of Scarborough Marsh on the 13th and one was in the Dyer Point and Kettle Cove areas of Cape Elizabeth on 5/17. A “flock” of 16 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS at Freeport’s Florida Lake Park (off of Route 125; Map 6: C-1) on 5/16 was a very good count. 5 RED PHALAROPES were seen from a boat in Saco Bay on the 16th. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER made an appearance in a Portland yard on 5/15. The first OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER of the spring was at Portland’s Evergreen Cemetery on 5/9. A YELLOW-THROATED VIREO made an appearance at Evergreen Cemetery on the 9th and 10th and one was found at Bath’s Butler Head (Delorme Map 6: B-4) on the 16th. A BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was seen in a Windham yard on 5/13. A good fallout of warblers – thanks to pre-dawn showers and a shift in the wind – on the morning of 5/15 produced 18 species at South Portland’s Hinckley Park, plus a report of multiple PHILADELPHIA VIREOS, and 14 species – but very good numbers of many – at Evergreen Cemetery. Evergreen has hosted 10-15 species each day this week, but 20 species were tallied there on 5/16, including the aforementioned Hooded Warbler and 5-6 BAY-BREASTED WARBLERS. A BLUE-WINGED WARBLER returned to Rotary Park in Biddeford on 5/9, and continued through at least 5/14, with one at Evergreen Cemetery on 5/10. Meanwhile, a “BREWSTER’S” WARBLER was identified at Evergreen Cemetery on 5/9, and it was reported again the next day. A CAPE MAY WARBLER graced Evergreen on 5/14, while PRAIRIE WARBLER reports were a bit more widespread than usual this week. The cool, wet weather has once again driven numbers of orioles, tanagers, etc to feeding stations. Leading the pack is a Windham yard that hosted up to 12 BALTIMORE ORIOLES, 12 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS, 4 SCARLET TANAGERS this week, as well as a female and immature male ORCHARD ORIOLE on 5/11-13. A female Orchard Oriole visited a Biddeford feeder on the 13th, joined by an immature male the 15th. Meanwhile, on the 17th, a West Kennebunk feeding station hosted 18 Baltimore Orioles, 1 1st year Orchard, 6 Scarlet Tanagers, and 8 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. Many other feeders around the area were reporting 2-8 of each of these species this week. Evergreen Cemetery hosted a single RUSTY BLACKBIRD on the 9th. Species for which observations and reports have increased this week are far too numerous to list, but additional new arrivals included SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, COMMON TERN, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, WHIP-POOR-WILL, EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, “TRAILL’S” FLYCATCHER, RED-EYED VIREO, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, Bay-breasted Warbler, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, CANADA WARBLER, FIELD SPARROW, LINCOLN’S SPARROW, and BOBOLINK. - End transcript May 9, 2007 Click on the date to view the rare bird alert.
