This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: Despite gusty NW winds during the day Fri through Sun, mostly clear skies at night and light winds produced a consistent turnover of migrants each morning this week. The week was very dry (except for a few scattered showers from a weak cold front early Sun am) with temps increasing into the 80’s (cooler along the coast where seabreezes developed) by Tues. on SW winds as high pressure remained in control. Two MUTE SWANS were around Prout’s Neck in Scarborough (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on 5/7. Early in the day, they were at Western Beach, and later they were seen in the Libby River marsh section, visible from Old Neck Rd. A pair of GADWALL were behind the Clambake Restaurant off of Pine Point Rd in Scarborough Marsh on 5/6, with 3 NORTHERN SHOVELERS there as well that day. An AMERICAN BITTERN was at Portland’s Capisic Pond Park on the 6th. The Bradbury Mountain Hawkwatch, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth (www.yarmouthbirds.com/hawkwatch.asp) has totaled 2,061 raptors to date. In the past six days (Thurs, 5/3 to Tues, 5/8), only 116 raptors were counted: 18 OSPREY, 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 40 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 2 COOPER’S HAWKS, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 41 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS, 7 AMERICAN KESTRELS, and 4 MERLINS. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER continues at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Saco. Pairs of CAROLINA WRENS continue in a Gorham yard and here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth, while a single visited a West Kennebunk yard on the 7th. An exceptional count of 250+ RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS was made along the edge of the Hurricane Road, Falmouth (Delorme Map 5: D-4) on the morning of 5/5. A single BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was found at Evergreen Cemetery on the 4th, and two were at the Sanford Sewerage facility (Gavel Rd off of Rte 4; Delorme Map 2: C-4) on the next day. A BLUE-WINGED WARBLER was reported from a Berwick yard on 5/6, while a rare-in-spring ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was discovered at Evergreen Cemetery on 5/8. A PRAIRIE WARBLER was at the Hurricane Road powerline cut on 5/5, while Florida Lake Park in Freeport hosted another on 5/8. Two LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES continue along Falmouth’s Hurricane Rd this week, while a single was reported from Evergreen Cemetery on 5/7. A very good flight of WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS occurred on the night of 5/6-7, as exemplified by a report of “several hundred” at Evergreen Cemetery on 5/7. A single RUSTY BLACKBIRD was along Hurricane Rd in Falmouth on the 6th, while a female ORCHARD ORIOLE was reported from a Yarmouth yard on the 5th. Observations and reports of SPOTTED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, CHIMNEY SWIFT, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER, GRAY CATBIRD, BROWN THRASHER, NORTHERN PARULA, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and FIELD SPARROW increased this week, while other new arrivals included GREEN HERON, VIRGINIA RAIL, SORA, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, LEAST FLYCATCHER, GREAT-CRESTED FLYCATCHER, EASTERN KINGBIRD, WARBLING VIREO, BANK SWALLOW, CLIFF SWALLOW, VEERY, WOOD THRUSH, YELLOW WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER, OVENBIRD, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, WILSON’S WARBLER, SCARLET TANAGER, BOBOLINK, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE.
