Weather Summary: Heavy rain early Fri am was followed by steady light rain during the day. A series of shortwaves then produced periods of showers and drizzle Sat pm through Mon, with heavier rain and a few thunderstorms on Mon. NW winds dried us out for Tues, with a few showers early Wed morning – as a low passed to our south – apparently grounding some migrants. Clear nights under high pressure Wed through Thurs facilitated migrants. High temps varied from 10 degrees below normal (Mon) to about 5 degrees above normal (Tues and Thurs) this week (N= 59/40F). The most intriguing reports of the week came not from the field, but from a wildlife rehabber in Cape Neddick. After a **PURPLE GALLINULE** was brought to them last week (and released this week), a (THE???) **YELLOW-NOSED ALBATROSS** was brought in on 4/30. The Albatross was found emaciated in a backyard in York. It was responding well to forced-feeding, and was transferred to a facility at Tufts University on 5/1. Video – even audio – of the bird can be viewed at www.wgme.com/News/story_6@shtml. It seems more than likely that these two birds were related to the massive Nor’Easter last week. (What else is out there?) An AMERICAN BITTERN was present at Freeport’s Florida Lake Park (off Rte 125; Delorme Map 6: C-1) on 5/2. The Bradbury Mountain Hawkwatch, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth (www.yarmouthbirds.com/hawkwatch.asp) has totaled 1,944 raptors to date, as the hawk flight caught up as well this week, including a high of 288 birds tallied on May 1, which included 228 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS. In the past seven days (Thurs, 4/19 to Wed, 4/25) 430 raptors were counted: 42 OSPREY, 3 BALD EAGLE, 5 NORTHERN HARRIERS, 55 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 1 COOPER’S HAWKS, 1 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 300 Broad-winged Hawks, 2 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 17 AMERICAN KESTRELS, 2 MERLINS, and 2 unidentified. A lone AMERICAN COOT was seen in a brushy pond on South St in Biddeford, on the left side of the road, about one mile west of its junction with Main St (Delorme Map 3: C-1) on 4/26. A SANDHILL CRANE passed by the Bradbury Mountain Hawkwatch at 10:16am on 5/1. First spotted soaring to the SW, it then glided by, heading NNE. A single BONAPARTE’S GULL was out of place at Portland’s Evergreen Cemetery on the 1st. A minor fallout of early migrants occurred on the morning of 5/2, with the highest counts from Freeport’s Florida Lake Park: 500+ YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 100+ “YELLOW” PALM WARBLERS, and single “WESTERN” PALM, BLACK-AND-WHITE, PINE, and a newly arrived BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER were present as well. Two LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSHES returned to a ravine on the south side of Hurricane Rd in Falmouth (Delorme Map 5: D-4) on the 26th. At least 6 VESPER SPARROWS had returned to the Kennebunk Plains by 5/1. 4 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were observed at Evergreen Cemetery on the 2nd. Reports and observations of LITTLE BLUE HERON, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, WILLET, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, BARN SWALLOW, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER, Black-and-white Warbler, and EASTERN TOWHEE also increased this week, while other new arrivals included SOLITARY SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, CHIMNEY SWIFT, NORTHERN PARULA, Black-throated Blue Warbler, AMERICAN REDSTART, and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH.
