This recording was updated on Thursday, November 11, 2004 with highlights that include: late migrants such as ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, even more RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, and a few more DICKCISSELS. An “Alberta Clipper” (a fast moving winter-time low pressure system out of Canada) passed through our area Sunday night. High pressure built in behind it, giving us sunny but cool days, with clear, and progressively colder nights. A few flurries reached the western parts of our reporting area on Tuesday, and temperatures on Wednesday morning were only in the single digits in a number of locales. Since Monday’s Special Edition summarized sightings through Sunday, this report is shorter than usual. However, a number of excellent birds have been seen in the last few days. The two adult “BLUE” SNOW GEESE continue in the fields of Thornhurst Farm along Rte 115 in North Yarmouth (Delorme Map 5: D-5). Eight HARLEQUIN DUCKS continue at “The Nubble” in Cape Neddick. A drake BARROW’S GOLDENEYE dropped in to join RUDDY DUCKS and other species at the Sanford Sewage Ponds (off Rte 4 in Sanford, Delorme Map C-4) on 11/9. GREAT CORMORANTS are slowly replacing DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS along the coast, as we expect this time of year. Thanks to an article in Sunday’s Portland Press Herald, a number of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER sightings have been reported to the store. Birds were seen at feeders this week in Naples, York, Topsham, Falmouth, and Limerick, as well as in Portland’s Dragon Fields (Near the intersections of Presumpscot and Ocean Ave; Delorme Map 72: C-3) on the 9th. Over 75 sightings of Red-bellied Woodpeckers have been recorded in the state this fall! Two CAROLINA WRENS continue at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth’s feeders, while a single bird was in a Portland yard on 11/9. A PINE WARBLER was in the neighborhood near “The Nubble,” on Cape Neddick on the 9th, a “YELLOW” PALM WARBLER was at Fort Williams Park in South Portland on the 8th (Delorme Map 73: G-6), and a late BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was discovered at Fort Foster, Kittery on 11/9. A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found on Bailey’s Island, Harpswell on 11/7. A very late ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK has been visiting a feeder in Springvale since the 7th and an INDIGO BUNTING stopped by the feeders at Gilsland Farm, Falmouth on the 11th. An immature male DICKCISSEL continues at Portland’s Dragon Field at least through the 8th. One flew over a Cumberland yard that day as well, while another immature male is visiting the feeders at Gilsland Farm, Falmouth since the 8th. Small flocks of RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and COMMON GRACKLES were on the move this week, likely some of the last to head south. It seems that PURPLE FINCHES and PINE SISKINS have passed us by. Despite 100’s of Purple Finches to our south, in places like Cape May, NJ, only small numbers are being seen in the southcoast of Maine.
