This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: A strong, late-season Nor’Easter produced 5.5” to 11” of snow Fri pm through Sat am, before changing over to sleet, freezing rain, and rain (sooner along the coast) before ending Sat pm as freezing drizzle. Light snow Sun morning was followed by flurries during the day in the wake of Sat’s storm. A weak system Mon night produced light snow, while a warm front Thurs am triggered some freezing rain. Temps. remained below normal through Wed, but SW winds on Thurs helped propel stalled migrants and increased temps into the 50’s (N= 44/27). 24 BRANT were behind Hattie’s Deli at Biddeford Pool on 3/16, 5 were at Zebb’s Cove in Cape Elizabeth on 3/18, 20 were at Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth on 3/19, and 9 were at Willard Beach in South Portland on 3/22. At least one drake GADWALL arrived in Scarborough Marsh on 3/18, spotted in Jones Creek as it passes between the two buildings at Pelreco, and seen elsewhere for the next few days. A pair of AMERICAN WIGEON and a drake NORTHERN PINTAIL visited a North Windham feeder on 3/18. Portland’s overwintering American Wigeon was seen again on multiple occasions at Evergreen Cemetery. 4 drake and 2 hen BARROW’S GOLDENEYE continue in the Lower Harraseeket River in South Freeport, as tallied from Winslow Park (Delorme Map 6: D-1) on the 19th. A vanguard GREAT EGRET was observed in Scarborough Marsh on 3/22. The Topsham RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was spotted again this week, perched alongside the southbound lanes, ½ mile north of Exit 31 of I295 on the 19th, while one returned to a Hollis yard this week. While one ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was spotted in Scarborough Marsh from Route 1/9 on the 18th, 4 were seen later that day behind the Pelreco building. Three were seen in the Marsh on the 19th. Two more were noted at Cape Elizabeth’s Spurwink Marsh (Delorme Map 3: A-4) on 3/18. A MERLIN buzzed through Portland’s Dragon Field (behind the Quarry Run dogpark, near the intersection of Ocean and Presumpscot; Delorme Map 73: C-3) on 3/16 and one was spotted along Nutter Rd in South Portland (Delorme Map 73: G-4) on 3/22. The Bradbury Mountain Raptor Research Project Spring Hawkwatch, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth, got underway on Wed. the 20th. The count will run seven days a week, from 9 to 5, weather permitting. The first bird of the season was a light morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at 9:17 am on Day 1. The first two days of the count yielded 41 migrants: 8 TURKEY VULTURES, 8 BALD EAGLES, 1 SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, 1 COOPER’S HAWK, 7 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, 12 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 1 PEREGRINE FALCON, and one Unidentified. The first PIPING PLOVER of the spring was found at Reid State Park in Georgetown on 3/21. 25 DUNLIN were observed flying between Biddeford Pool (behind Hattie’s) and Biddeford Pool Beach on 3/16 while 27 continue at Freeport’s Winslow Park. The 3rd Cycle ICELAND GULL continues at Union Wharf in Portland’s Old Port (Delorme Map 73: F-4). A SNOWY OWL was discovered on private property in Brunswick on 3/19. It was seen through dusk, but it has not been seen since. A pair of RED-BELLIED WOODPECKERS are visiting a feeder along Sawyer Rd in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: A-4) while a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen again in Evergreen Cemetery on 3/21. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was found at Fuller Farm, off of Broadturn Rd in Scarborough (Delorme Map 3: A-2) on the 21st. A second CAROLINA WREN returned to a Gorham yard, one continues in Saco’s Laurel Hill Cemetery, two were refound along Portland’s Eastern Promenade (near its Old-Port end) on 3/19, and 1-2 continue here at the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth. A “IPSWICH” SAVANNAH SPARROW was found in the dunes about half-way between Camp Ellis and Bayview (Delorme Map 3: C-3) in Saco on the same day. Meanwhile, FOX SPARROWS were widely reported, in surprising numbers, especially after being driven to feeders by the weekend’s storm. Eight LAPLAND LONGSPURS were found behind the Scarborough Marsh Nature Center on 3/18 while SNOW BUNTINGS were noted at a few locations this week, with a high count of 14 from Seavy’s Landing in Scarborough Marsh on 3/18.
