Weather Summary: The weather this week was more noteworthy than the birding! A massive and complex storm system on Fri produced up to 12” of snow, with much lower totals along the coast where precip. changed to sleet, freezing rain, and rain. Gusts as high as 69mph (in Cape Elizabeth) were recorded as strong easterly winds pounded the coast. Weaker systems produced light rain Sat. pm and scattered flurries and snow showers Sun pm. After temps rose into the 40’s for the weekend, a cold front Mon pm – which produced some snow squalls – ushered in record-breaking bitterly cold air, reinforced by a cold front (which triggered flurries) on Thurs. Tues was the second coldest day of the entire winter, with a high of only 18 in Portland, which set a record for lowest high temp for the date (normal= 39F), as did the 18 degree high on Wed. Meanwhile the lows of –6 on Wed, and 0 on Thurs also broke the records for the date (normal=22). Strong NW winds on Tues (20-40mph) and Thurs made things feel even colder.

Up to 25 BRANT continue at Cape Elizabeth’s Kettle Cove, while two MUTE SWANS returned to the Cape Neddick River (Delorme Map 1: A-5) on 3/4.

The first hint of northbound duck migration was detected this week. A drake NORTHERN PINTAIL visited with MALLARDS in the Mousam River in Springvale (Delorme Map 2: C-3) on 3/2, while the overwintering drake GADWALL was seen again along Portland’s Eastern Promenade on 3/3. A pair of AMERICAN WIGEONS were reported from the Little River at Granite Point in Biddeford (Delorme Map 3: D-3) on 3/3, while the overwintering drake continues to be seen at the Eastern Prom and Evergreen Cemetery, traveling with the resident flock of Mallards.

A pair of BARROW’S GOLDENEYE were present in the Saco River, as viewed from Water St in Saco (from behind a gray apartment building; Delorme Map 71: B-2) on the 4th, while one drake was still present the next day. Meanwhile, the flock in the Lower Harraseeket River of South Freeport was down to 5 drakes and 2 hens as of the 7th, as viewed from Winslow Park (Delorme Map 6: D-1). One drake HOODED MERGANSER returned to the Lower Falls in Yarmouth, as viewed from the Rte 88 bridge (Delorme Map 5: D-5) on the 4th, along with the 2 continuing hen COMMON MERGANSERS. 13 Hoodies were in Jones Creek in Scarborough Marsh on the 4th, with a pair at Reid State Park in Georgetown on the same day. Meanwhile, 11 Common Mergs were tallied in the Presumpscot River from Middle Rd in Falmouth (Delorme Map 5: E-4) on the 4th.

Small numbers of TURKEY VULTURES (up to 4, but usually singles) were widely reported this week.

The I-295 RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was spotted on a couple of occasions this week, just north of Exit 31, while one visited a West Kennebunk yard on 3/3. A light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was over Portland’s Eastern Promenade on 3/5.

20-30 DUNLIN continue as Freeport’s Winslow Park.

A GLAUCOUS GULL was reported from the Portland Fish Pier off Commercial St (Delorme Map 73: F-4) on 3/4.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen in late afternoon near the mouth of the Morse River at Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg on the 4th.

Two CAROLINA WRENS are still being seen in and around the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was spotted along Royal Rd on the North Yarmouth/Pownal border (Delorme Map 5: C-5) on the 3rd, while another was seen along South St (Rte. 114) in Gorham (Delorme Map 3: A-2) on the 5th.

6 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS visited a Freeport yard for the first time on 3/7.

The vanguard of migrant RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS began this week. The first report was received from Cape Neddick on the 3rd, with sightings of singles and small numbers from around the area increasing through the week. Meanwhile, the first COMMON GRACKLE was seen at Pine Point in Scarborough on the 4th.

PURPLE FINCH reports increased significantly this week around the area, as birds begin to trickle northward. 3 male WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, including two territorial singers, were detected at Reid State Park on 3/8. Becoming more and more noteworthy every year, 35 EVENING GROSBEAKS were exciting to hear about, seen at a feeder on Foreside Rd in Topsham (Delorme Map 6: B-3/4) on 3/5. Unfortunately, they have not been reported again.
