Hotline: Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert (Internet Only).
Date: Thursday, March 1, 2007 compiled at: 5:30pm.
    To report: (207) 846-8002, or wbcbirds_AT_yarmouthbirds_dot_com.
Coverage: York, Cumberland, and Sagadahoc Counties.

This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. All locations not found in A Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of current and past reports can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com.

Weather Summary: Temps were much more seasonable this week, ranging from 6 degrees below the normal high on Sat to 5 above on Sun (N= 37/20 in Portland for Thurs). Strong NW winds on Fri and Sat made it feel much colder, however, but still a significant improvement from the last few weeks! Other than a couple of snow shower or flurry events – especially for southern York County - all of the week’s storm systems stayed to our south. Ice is breaking up on bays, coves, and some rivers, and winter waterfowl concentrations are beginning to disperse.

A lone BRANT was at Scarborough’s Western Beach on 2/27.

A drake WOOD DUCK was discovered near the Saccarappa Falls of the Presumpscot River in Westbrook on 2/23 within a large group of MALLARDS. It continued through at least 2/25. The bird can be viewed from the riverside boardwalk, accessible from behind the Bank of America on Main St. (Delorme Map 5: E-3). Equally gorgeous, but much less native, a RED-CRESTED POCHARD has successfully overwintered in the area, spending its days as well with Mallards and making daily visits to a Falmouth feeder. Also associating with Mallards, a drake AMERICAN WIGEON that has been overwintering around Portland was hanging out in Evergreen Cemetery 2/28-29.

51 HARLEQUIN DUCKS tallied at the Cliff House in Ogunquit on 2/26 was a good total.

The BARROW’S GOLDENEYE flock in the Lower Harraseeket River in Freeport declined slightly this week, with a high count of 6 drakes and 2 hens tallied from Winslow Park (Delorme Map 6: D-1) on 2/25. With the receding ice, the flock is once again frequenting the area around the South Freeport Town Landing, at the end of Main St (Delorme Map 6: C-1). Also, one drake was in the New Meadows River on the Bath/Brunswick border, as viewed from the New Meadows Ledges Inn on Bath/State Rd (Delorme Map 6: C-4) on 2/23, with two present on 2/26. A single drake was found in the Saco River in Biddeford, viewed from Rte 1 as it crosses the southern branch of the river around Springs Island (Delorme Map 71: B-2). Meanwhile, two female HOODED MERGANSERS returned to Pratt’s Brook/Cousins River on the Yarmouth/Freeport border, as viewed from the Muddy Rudder Restaurant on Rte 1 (Delorme Map 6: D-1).

Prospecting TURKEY VULTURES were reported from Gorham (2/23), York (two on 2/23), and Richmond (2/23).

A NORTHERN GOSHAWK visited a Phippsburg yard on the 27th, while the adult RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was spotted along I-295 once again, this time off the southbound lanes just north of exit 31 on the 23rd. One dark morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was spotted over Black Point Rd, at the Nonesuch River, on the north side of Scarborough Marsh on the 24th. A light morph individual was spotted there as well, which may or may not be the same individual that was spotted from Eastern Rd on the same day, and other locations around the marsh this week. Observers are encouraged to age and/or sex individuals (if possible) to help achieve an accurate count of the number of birds in the area.

20 SANDERLING were noted at Western Beach in Scarborough on 2/27. This week’s PURPLE SANDPIPER high count was the 50 or so birds tallied from Beach Ave in Kennebunk Beach (Delorme Map 3: D-2) on 2/26, while 22 DUNLIN were still at Winslow Park, as observed on 2/25.

A BELTED KINGFISHER was along Rte1/9 through Scarborough Marsh on the 24th.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was discovered at the summit of Bradbury Mountain in Pownal on 2/26, but was not present the next morning.

A CAROLINA WREN has been overwintering in a Phippsburg yard, and one has been singing in a Portland yard this week.

One male EASTERN BLUEBIRD returned to a Scarborough yard on the 25th, with 6-10 being spotted near Westbrook’s Saccarappa Falls on the same day.

Two SAVANNAH SPARROWS were found at Kittery’s Fort Foster on 2/26, while a FOX SPARROW has been overwintering in a Phippsburg yard.

A lone LAPLAND LONGSPUR was at Cape Elizabeth’s Dyer Point (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on the 27th.

Two WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS passed over Bradbury Mountain State Park on 2/26.
