This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. All locations not found in A Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of current and past reports can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com. Weather Summary: Sat.’s high of 36 in Portland was the first time we saw a high above normal (by a whole degree!) in over 3 weeks. A shortwave and a passing upper-level trough produced snow showers on Sun., with some locally heavy squalls in the pm. Strong NW winds followed with a return to arctic air for Mon, but as the upper air flow became more zonal, temps moderated, and soared to 40F (!) on Wed. A weak low produced a few flurries on Tues. The Kettle Cove area of Cape Elizabeth is now hosting up to 20 BRANT. Late and lingering waterfowl have been making news all winter, and that continued this week. A drake NORTHERN PINTAIL continues at Martin Point in Portland (Delorme Map 72: D-3), while single drake AMERICAN WIGEON and GADWALL continue to be seen sporadically along Portland’s Eastern Promenade. But, this week’s high count of BARROW’S GOLDENEYE at Winslow Park in Freeport (Delorme Map 6: D-1) was only 7 drakes and 1 hen, tallied on the 22nd. Another pair of Barrows had returned to the New Meadows River on the 22nd as well, as reported from the New Meadows Inn on Bath Rd (Delorme Map 6: C-4). A single drake was in the Saco River, beneath the Upper Dam which is visible from Water St, which runs between Main St and Rte 1 (Delorme Map 71: B-2). The Lower Falls of the Royal River in Yarmouth, as viewed from Rte 88 near Yarmouth Harbor (Delorme Map 5: D-5) continued to host all three MERGANSERS: 1 drake HOODED, 2 female COMMON, and 2 female RED-BREASTED through at least 2/21. Meanwhile, small numbers of Common have been noted from a number of locations this week including 3 in the Mousam River of Kennebunk on 2/19 and another 3 in the Androscoggin River, as viewed from the Bowdoin Mill in Topsham on 2/20. The high count for the week, however, was the 20 spotted from the 1-295 bridge over the Presumpscot River in Portland (Delorme Map 5: E-4) on 2/18. Two “Hoodies” returned to Pratt’s Brook on the Yarmouth/Freeport border, as viewed from Rte 1 near the Muddy Rudder Restaurant on 2/22. And finally, 11 RUDDY DUCKS were found off of Falmouth’s Mackworth Island on 2/17. At least one light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK continues in Scarborough Marsh, being seen from multiple locations on multiple dates this week (how many are actually present?) while a dark-morph bird was reported from behind the Clambake Restaurant on Pine Point Rd in Scarborough (Delorme Map 3; B-3) on 2/18. An immature PEREGRINE FALCON was seen again in Portland, this time along the Eastern Promenade on 2/22. Six SANDERLING were on Drake’s Island Beach in Wells (Delorme Map 3: E-1) on the 18th, while Freeport’s Winslow Park continues to host up to 15 DUNLIN. A 3rd-Cycle ICELAND GULL was identified at Union Wharf in Portland Harbor on 2/17, while an adult has reportedly continued to frequent the area as well, seen as recently as 2/22 at the Portland Fish Pier. A 2nd-Cycle GLAUCOUS GULL was noted at Mill Creek Cove in South Portland on 2/18. A 1st-Cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was discovered roosting on the ice off of the south side of the Mackworth Island causeway, as viewed from Bayshore Drive (Delorme Map 72: C-4) on 2/18. One DOVEKIE was reported from Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on the 18th. A NORTHERN FLICKER continued to visit a Freeport yard this week. 2 CAROLINA WRENS continue at and around the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth, another pair has been spending the winter in yards on Depot Rd in Yarmouth, two more were noted along Long Sands Rd in York (Delorme Map 1: B-5) on 2/21, while singles continue in yards in Gorham and Freeport. 2 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS have been present in a Pownal yard for about a month, while 3 were observed along Organug Rd in York on the 21st. A HERMIT THRUSH was caught snacking on winterberry berries in a window flower box on a Yarmouth apartment on the 19th. Two adult male SCARLET TANAGERS were reported from a cluster of cattail near 180 Beach Avenue in Kennebunk (Delorme Map 3: E-1; Delorme Portland Street Atlas Map 4: D/E 4). No further details were available at this time. About 20 LAPLAND LONGSPURS joined HORNED LARKS off of the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh on 2/21. Whether early, late, or stuck somewhere in between, an EASTERN MEADOWLARK was spotted behind the Clambake Restaurant on Pine Point Rd in Scarborough on 2/18. Four WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were along Libby Rd in Pownal, about ½ way between Elmwood Rd and Tuttle Rd (Delorme Map 6: C-1) on the 19th.
