This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. All locations not found in A Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of current and past reports can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com. Weather Summary: A fast-moving coastal storm developed, producing up to 3” of snow Thurs night and Fri morning, with flurries and snow showers through Sat. am. Temps rose into the mid-30’s on Fri before strong NW winds on Sat (gust up to 40mph) ushered in cold, arctic air as temps remained below normal through Tues. An area of convergence formed a trough offshore which produced bands of snow on Mon and Tues am. Totals ranged from 2” in Kittery to 7.8” in Biddeford and Westbrook. After highs on Wed reached 38F in Portland (N=31F), a cold front Wed reinforced the arctic air. Single-digit lows Thurs. am were below the seasonal average of 12F. Cape Elizabeth’s Kettle Cove hosted 14 BRANT on 1/21, with 9 present on 1/24. While two MUTE SWANS dropped into the Cape Neddick River on 1/22, three are now in the lower Ogunquit River (Delorme Map 2: E-5) as of 1/25. An AMERICAN WIGEON was found in Jones Creek in Scarborough Marsh on the 25th. The 15 HARLEQUIN DUCKS at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth on the 21st was a good count for that location. 4 drake and one hen BARROW’S GOLDENEYES are now in the lower Harraseeket River of South Freeport (Delorme Map 6: C/D-1), having been seen from both Winslow Park and the Town Landing at the end of Main St. this week. Meanwhile, a pair was found in the New Meadows River in Bath, from the New Meadows Inn on Bath Rd (Delorme Map 6: C-4) on 1/21. Unusually large numbers of HOODED MERGANSERS for late January were detected this week, including 16 in the Royal River of Yarmouth (from the boat launch and marina area; Delorme Map 6: D-1) on 1/20, with 13 still present on the 25th. 24 were tallied in the New Meadows River off of Bath Rd on the 21st, while one was off of Fortunes Rocks Beach in Biddeford on 1/20 as well. Small numbers of COMMON MERGANSERS were noted from a number of locations as well. A PACIFIC LOON was well-described from Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth on the 21st. It was seen there again on the 24th. A late DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT flew over Tukey’s Bridge (Rte 295/Rte 1) in Portland on 1/20. Single TURKEY VULTURES over I95 in the Maine Mall area and over Rte 114 in Scarborough (at Payne Rd) on the 21st, likely pertained to the same individual. An adult RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was spotted perched along the southbound lanes of I-295 in Topham, just north of exit 31 on the 25th. One ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was over Scarborough Marsh on the 19th and 25th, but two birds – both dark morph – were there on the 21st, with two of unreported flavor spotted on the 24th. One light morph bird was over I-295, near Exit 4 in South Portland, on the 21st as well. An AMERICAN KESTREL appears to be overwintering on Sugarloaf Island in the mouth of the Kennebec. A PEREGRINE FALCON passed by Fortunes Rocks Beach in Biddeford on the 23rd. 25 SANDERLINGS were on Pine Point/Old Orchard Beaches on 1/21 and about 200 PURPLE SANDPIPERS were seen flying between Two Lights State Park and Richmond Island on the same day. An adult ICELAND GULL was at the Portland Fish Pier, off of Commercial Street, on 1/20, with two across the river at Mill Creek Cove in South Portland on the same day. Two DOVEKIES were spotted off of Small Point in Phippsburg on 1/19, and one was off of the Cliff House in Ogunquit on 1/20. Single THICK-BILLED MURRES was found off of Vine’s Landing at Biddeford Pool on 1/18 and off of Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on 1/21. As usual, with the onset of snow and cold temperatures, CAROLINA WRENS made more appearances at feeders. While one pair continues in a Gorham yard and singles continue in a Scarborough yard, Capisic Pond Park in Portland, a Portland neighborhood (where it was singing in sub-zero wind chills on 1/20), and at Two Lights State Park, while “new” birds were in a York yard (2), and there are now 2 in a Yarmouth yard. An incredibly out-of-season WOOD THRUSH at Community Park in Wells (off of Harbor Rd; Delorme Map 3: E-1) was photographed on 1/21, and likely provided the state’s first winter record of this Neotropical migrant. One YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER was there as well. Somewhat more seasonable was a HERMIT THRUSH along Fessenden Rd in Cape Elizabeth on the same day. 5 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS returned to a Scarborough yard, at least 7 continue around Grondin Pond, one visited a New Gloucester yard on the 22nd, and 4 were reported from School Street in Freeport (Delorme Map 6: C-1) on the 24th. Late sparrows this week included: a CHIPPING SPARROW that has been frequenting a Cumberland feeder, an “IPSWICH” SAVANNAH SPARROW at Two Lights State Park on 1/24, a FOX SPARROW at a York feeder, and a late SWAMP SPARROW at Portland’s Capisic Pond Park on 1/25. A DICKCISSEL – likely the bird that had been seen around the post office - was found at a feeder on Elphie St in Biddeford Pool – the short road that ends at the northeast corner of the Biddeford Pool Beach parking lot on the 23rd.
