This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: Fri-Wed: N/A. However, winter clearly arrived while we were gone! After a cold start (5F in Portland) on Thurs., temps moderated to the upper 20’s on SW winds. A SNOW GOOSE was found at Biddeford Pool on 1/18 and Dyer Point in Cape Elizabeth (Delorme Map 3: B-5) hosted 12 BRANT on 1/12. The family of three MUTE SWANS continues in Legion Pond in Kittery (Delorme Map at the corner of Paul St and Rte 103; Delorme Map 1: B-3) through at least 1/13. Grondin Pond continued to host a good assortment of ducks through the 14th, at least. (See directions on last week’s SCMRBA at www.yarmouthbirds.com/rare_bird_alerts.asp). As of the 14th, the pair of CANVASBACKS were still being seen along with 1 drake AMERICAN WIGEON, GREATER and LESSER SCAUP, up to 20 RUDDY DUCKS, and up to 12 AMERICAN COOTS. Two RING-NECKED DUCKS continued through the 13th as well. However, by week’s end, the pond was frozen solid. A RED-THROATED LOON was rescued from the encroaching ice – and sent to a wildlife rehabber, where it is reportedly doing well. Only about 10 AMERICAN COOTS are still camped out on the ice there, but finally departed by mid-afternoon on the 18th. Meanwhile, a NORTHERN PINTAIL was noted at Phillips Cove in York (Delorme Map 1: B-5) on the 13th, while a drake KING EIDER appeared at the Cliff House in Ogunquit on the 17th. One BARROW’S GOLDENEYE was noted at Biddeford Pool on the 18th, along Ocean Avenue and 150 COMMON MERGANSERS off of the boat launch at the north end of Front Street in Bath was a good January count, tallied there on the 11th. Two RUDDY DUCKS were seen in the marsh behind Parson’s Beach in Kennebunk (Delorme Map 3: D-1). One TURKEY VULTURE was spotted over the Rte 1 rotary in Kittery on 1/13 and another was over Rte 22 in Gorham, near Smiling Hill Farm (Delorme Map 3: A-3) on 1/18. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was spotted at Throne Head Preserve in Bath (Delorme Map 6: B-5) on 1/11. An albino RED-TAILED HAWK was spotted for the 5th consecutive winter in Eliot. The bird is usually seen along Rte 236, in the area near the Marshwood Junior High School. The Portland PEREGRINE FALCON continues as well. 73 DUNLIN at Biddeford Pool on 1/16 was a good winter count. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER visited a Yarmouth yard on the 19th. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on Brackett Rd in Gorham, just north of its intersection with McClellan Rd (Delorme Map 3: A-3) on 1/12. At least 7 EASTERN BLURBIRDS continue around Grondin Pond as well. The Eastern Promenade YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT continues to be seen near the sewage treatment plant through at least 1/16.
