This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: The weather continues to be remarkable, as ridiculously mild continued this week, allowing waterfowl and some passerines to linger, and helping to keep more of Maine’s birders active. A series of weak shortwaves produced periods of rain Fri and Sat, with continued mild temps thanks to the SW flow, as a low passed to our west. A record high of 67F was set on Sat, breaking the old record of 53F at 7:00am! In fact, the 67F was the highest temp ever recorded in Jan (recording keeping since 1941) and the 36 degrees departure above normal was the greatest ever recorded on any day in any month in Portland! A strong cold front Sat. night triggered more rain and even some strong thunderstorms, and temps on Sun were a mere 20F above normal on strong W winds. Rain fell throughout the day on Mon (beginning as sleet and snow in most areas) as a strong system passed through. Tues through Thurs were progressively colder on NW winds (with Thur’s highs in the upper 20’s failing to reach the normal - 32F in Portland - for the first time in a while!), reinforced by a weak cold front on Wed that produced some snow showers. Grondin Pond in Scarborough continues to be a hotspot. A drake CANVASBACK was first discovered in a nearby pond on Fogg Rd (near its intersection with Pleasant Hill Rd; Delorme Map 3: B-4) on 1/6, and it joined the continuing hen on Grondin on the next day. The pair continues through week’s end. Also present this week, with numbers of most species increasing during the week: up to 5 RING-NECKED DUCKS, both LESSER and GREATER SCAUP (up to 20 combined), 10 RUDDY DUCKS, up to about 20 AMERICAN COOTS. A female AMERICAN WIGEON dropped in on 1/7, while a RED-THROATED LOON was present – and somewhat out-of-place - on 1/10. Even more unusual was a RED-NECKED GREBE, which dropped in on 1/11. From Black Point Rd, Grondin Pond is off of Clearwater Ave (Delorme Map 3, B-4), but is surrounded by private property here. However, the productive south end of the lake can be viewed from the far end of the cemetery along Black Point Rd, just west of Clearwater Ave. Or, take Fogg Rd off of Black Point Rd to a left onto Woodview Rd, which ends at a cul-de-sac on the pond’s north end. That female AMERICAN WIGEON likely had relocated nearby to the reopened Prout’s Pond (off of Pleasant Hill Rd, behind “The Food Guy” restaurant; Delorme Map 3: A-4) by the 10th, joining two drake GADWALLS (up from one on the 7th). Away from Scarborough, two adult and one immature MUTE SWAN continue in Legion Pond in Kittery (at the corner of Paul St and Rte 103; Delorme Map 1: B-3) through 1/9, when a single drake WOOD DUCK was also there. Meanwhile, a drake AMERICAN WIGEON was once again off of Portland’s Eastern Promenade on 1/5 A female KING EIDER was discovered at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth on 1/4, but it has not been seen since. 62 HARLEQUIN DUCKS were tallied between Kittery and Moody Point on 1/9, with a high count of 32 from the Cliff House in Ogunquit. Two drake and one hen BARROW’S GOLDENEYE were present at Freeport’s Winslow Park (Delorme Map 6: D-1) as of 1/10. An immature DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT was noted in the Androscoggin River in Topsham on the 6th. One TURKEY VULTURE was over the Kennebunk exit of the Maine Turnpike on 1/7, three were spotted soaring over Route One in Ogunquit on 1/9, and one was over the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth on 1/11. The Portland PEREGRINE FALCON continues; roosting on the old train bridge off of the Eastern Promenade on the 5th. A “juvenile” SANDHILL CRANE was reported flying low over rooftops on Hildreth Rd in Harpswell (Delorme Map 6: C-3), heading west, on 1/5. Single DOVEKIES were spotted off Short Sands Beach in York on the 4th and the Nubble Light in Cape Neddick on the 6th, with small numbers of nearshore RAZORBILLS continuing as well. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was seen again at Saco’s Laurel Hill Cemetery on 1/5. A CAROLINA WREN continues at the Saco Yacht Club (at the end of Front Street; Delorme Map 71: B-3). Up to 15 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS are being seen around the Grondin Pond area, while at least one pair continues in a different Scarborough yard this week. Two YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were at Wells Harbor on the 7th and one was at Reid State Park in Georgetown on the same day. Meanwhile, a PALM WARBLER was found at Two Lights State Park on the 4th and the Eastern Promenade YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was seen again near the sewage treatment plant on the 4th. A lingering SAVANNAH SPARROW was noted along the Eastern Road Trail through Scarborough Marsh on 1/5, a late FOX SPARROW visited a North Harpswell feeder on 1/7, and a SWAMP SPARROW was at Kittery’s Seapoint Beach on 1/9.
