This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. All locations not found in A Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of current and past reports can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com. Weather Summary: 2006 finished as the warmest year on record for Portland, since record-keeping began in 1941. With a mean temperature of 48.5F for the year, all but one month saw above-normal temps (only Aug. was below normal, by 3/10 of a degree!). It was also the 4th wettest year on record, with 60.86” of precipitation. As 2006 ended with the 2nd warmest December on record, January 2007 also began with an absence of winter. Seasonable temps continued, for a change, through Sat. A strong shortwave surprised us with up to 4” of snow on Sat. Despite above-normal temps again on Sun, temps cooled enough overnight to produce sleet and freezing rain as a strong and complex low moved through. Precip changed to rain as temps rose again on southerly winds. After strong NW winds on Tues, SW winds brought a return to mild air, with temps again approaching 50F for Wed and Thurs (about 20F above normal). The Freeport-Brunswick CBC was held on 12/30, with light but steady snowfall hampering bird activity and birder coverage. No preliminary numbers were made available, but some highlights included yet another PACIFIC LOON, this one from Gun Point (Delorme Map 6: D-3) in Harpswell; one DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT at Cundy’s Harbor (Delorme Map 6: D-4); a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at Gun Point; single drake BARROW’S GOLDENEYES in the Royal River at the Yarmouth Boat Yard (off of Rte 88, Delorme Map 5: D-5) and off nearby Cousin’s Island; 1 NORTHERN FLICKER; at least 8 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS; 33 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at the intersection of Bow St and Lower Flying Point Rd in Freeport (Delorme Map 6: C-2); and least four COMMON REDPOLLS passing over Eider Point Rd in Yarmouth (Delorme Map 6: D-1). Meanwhile, Maquoit Bay (Delorme Map 6: C-2/3) was a real hotspot, producing 2 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 1 GADWALL, 4 HOODED MERGANSERS, 41 RUDDY DUCKS, 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, and 1 RUDDY TURNSTONE. The Biddeford-Kennebunk CBC was held during much nicer weather on New Year’s Eve. Again, no preliminary totals were available, but some highlights included an adult SNOW GOOSE and 2 RUDDY DUCKS – a first count record, in the Saco River from the Saco Yacht Club on Front St. (Delorme Map 71: B-3); eight BRANT at Biddeford Pool; a CAROLINA WREN at the Saco Yacht Club; a HERMIT THRUSH at Biddeford Pool; a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT (in thickets next to a gray house with a wooden staircase and open porch that is on the pool-side of Rte 208, roughly ½ mile east of the bridge at the Pool’s head; Delorme Map 3; C-3); and a DICKCISSEL within a flock of HOUSE SPARROWS, as usual, near the Biddeford Pool Post Office – which was seen again on 1/3. Grondin Pond (See directions on last week’s RBA at www.yarmouthbirds.com/rare_bird_alerts.asp) remains open and continues to host a hen CANVASBACK (through 1/4), one late DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT (through at least 12/28), 4 RING-NECKED DUCKS (through 1/4), up to 9 RUDDY DUCKS, 2-6 LESSER and 2-6 GREATER SCAUP, 12 AMERICAN COOTS. A 2nd Cycle GLAUCOUS GULL dropped in for a visit on 12/29. At least 3 EASTERN BLUEBIRD continue in yards in the area as well. Meanwhile, nearby Prout’s Pond (off of Pleasant Hill Rd, behind “The Food Guy” restaurant; Delorme Map 3: A-4) continued to host 3 drake GADWALL and a pair of AMERICAN WIGEON through at least 12/28, but it had finally froze over by the 4th. A pair of BARROW’S GOLDENEYES were reported from Curtis Cove, Granite Point Rd in Biddeford (Delorme Map 4: D-3) on the 31st. Single TURKEY VULTURES, perhaps even the same bird, were over the Portland Jetport and over Rte 22 in Westbrook on 1/2. Both the Brunswick/Topsham and the Portland PEREGRINE FALCONS continue to be seen. Portland Harbor hosted a 3rd Cycle ICELAND GULL and an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on 12/27, with an adult ICELAND visiting Portland’s East End Beach boat launch on 1/2. Mill Creek Cove in South Portland hosted two adult Icelands on 1/3. The only DOVEKIE report received this week was of one bird off of East Point Sanctuary in Biddeford Pool on the 31st, while smaller numbers of RAZORBILLS were noted at various locations this week. A lingering NORTHERN FLICKER continues at Portland’s Evergreen Cemetery. A CAROLINA WREN was heard in Kittery Point on New Year’s Day, while another visited a York feeder the day before. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was along Wells Rd through Cape Elizabeth’s Spurwink Marsh (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on the 2nd. Three EASTERN BLUEBIRDS visited a different Scarborough yard on 1/1. 2 very late PALM WARBLERS were reported from Kittery’s Seapoint Beach on 12/31.
