This is Derek and Jeannette Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. All locations not found in A Birder’s Guide to Maine by Pierson, et al. are referenced to the Delorme Maine Atlas. Transcripts of current and past reports can be found at www.yarmouthbirds.com. Weather Summary: A weak, dry cold front reduced temps slightly on Fri, with highs “only” around 40F. A strong low pressure system passed to our west on Sat, leaving us on the warm side of the storm. After a short period of mixed frozen precip Fri night, temps increased into the mid-40’s and rain fell through Sat. evening. A fast-moving disturbance produced a few showers on Sun, but high temps were once again 15-20 degrees above normal through Christmas Day. Another low pressure system produced rain on Tues (beginning with a mix of snow and ice on Mon night, ending with a few showers Tues evening). A northwest flow Wed and Thurs finally produced seasonably colder temperatures with highs in the mid-30s (normal equals 33F/15F in Portland). Six SNOW GEESE continue ay Laudholm Farms in Wells through at least 12/22. Scarborough’s Grondin Pond continues to host a hen CANVASBACK and 12 AMERICAN COOTS through at least 12/24. 20 RUDDY DUCKS were present on 12/20, which was down to 8 two days later. GREATER SCAUP counts included 1 on 12/22 and 2-3 on 12/24, with counts of LESSER SCAUP those days being 14 and 10, respectively. Meanwhile, one tardy DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT was also present there from 12/22 through at least the 24th. From Black Point Rd, Grondin Pond is off of Clearwater Ave (Delorme Map 3, B-4), but is surrounded by private property here. However, the productive south end of the lake can be viewed from the far end of the cemetery along Black Point Rd, just west of Clearwater Ave. Or, take Fogg Rd off of Black Point Rd to a left onto Woodview Rd, which ends at a cul-de-sac on the pond’s north end. Nearby Prout’s Pond (off of Pleasant Hill Rd, behind “The Food Guy” restaurant; Delorme Map 3: A-4) continues to host a pair of AMERICAN WIGEON and a trio of drake GADWALLS, through at least the 24th. Meanwhile, the first BARROW’S GOLDENEYE, a drake, arrived at Freeport’s Winslow Park (Delorme Map 6: D-1) by the 24th and the presumed escapee RED-CRESTED POCHARD is still visiting a Falmouth feeder as of the 23rd. Single TURKEY VULTURES were over the Maine Turnpike at the York River in York on 12/21, and in Falmouth on 12/24. A very truant OSPREY was reported from Cape Neddick on the 21st. DOVEKIES continue to be spotted from shore, with 4 at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth on 12/21, another 4 at nearby Dyer Point (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on 12/22, singles at Dyer Point on 12/23, Two Lights State Park on 12/24 and 12/25, Cliff House in Ogunquit on 12/24, and Scarborough Beach State Park on 12/24. A single THICK-BILLED MURRE also passed by Dyer Point on 12/22. RAZORBILLS also continue to be reported from many coastal locations, with this week’s high count being 70 from Dyer Point on Christmas Eve. Single CAROLINA WRENS frequented yards in Yarmouth and Pownal, while 4 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS continued in a Scarborough yard. A Windham suet feeder continues to host a male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER through at least the 23rd. 4 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS were present at Scarborough Beach State Park on 12/24. A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was re-found near the Sewage Treatment Plant on the Eastern Promenade in Portland on 12/27.
