This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: After the warmest Nov. on record in Portland, more seasonable weather finally arrived this week. A strong cold front and fast-moving storm system produced rain Thurs night through Fri. night, including rare Dec. thunderstorms and very strong winds – mostly from the NE – including gusts up to 65 mph (recorded in Cape Elizabeth). Very strong W winds followed for Sat. An offshore low brushed us Mon. am, producing our first light snow of the season. NW winds followed the passage of a cold front, and the rest of the week saw temps below normal until moderating on SW winds by Thurs, with temps again near 50, over 10 degrees above normal. The ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER continues at the Saco Yacht Club area through at least the morning of 12/5. The bird continues to be seen on the scrubby hillside, in the riparian trees near the public boat launch, and behind the yacht club itself. From downtown Saco, turn onto Front Street, bear right to proceed under the railroad tracks, and proceed to the boat launch parking lot (Delorme Map 71: B-3). The Thornhurst Farm, North Yarmouth (along Rte 115; Delorme Map 5: D-5) CANADA GOOSE flock stood at 485 birds on 12/3, but was decreasing as the week progressed. A tardy female GREEN-WINGED TEAL was at Portland’s Back Cove on the 3rd and 4th. Meanwhile, HARLEQUIN DUCKS are increasing at the usual locales along the coast, with this week’s high count on 25 being tallied along Ogunquit’s Marginal Way on the 2nd. 16 RUDDY DUCKS continue in Prout’s Pond (behind “The Food Guy” restaurant, on Pleasant Hill Rd in Scarborough; Delorme Map 3: A-4) as of the 3rd. GREAT CORMORANTS have now nearly completed their replacement of DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS along the coast. 6 TURKEY VULTURES were spotted over the Running Hill Rd area of South Portland (Delorme Map 73: G-1) on 12/2, with 1-2 reported from a number of other locations this week. While BALD EAGLES are not rare around Portland, what was rare was how cooperative one 1st Cycle bird was that feasted on a seal carcass within 10 feet of the multipurpose path around Back Cove, much to the delight of dozens and dozens of onlookers. The bird was present 11/30 through at least 12/4. A MERLIN was reported from Laudholm Farms in Wells on the 1st. The PEREGRINE FALCON continues to roost on the Andros Mill in Brunswick (off of Rte 1, along the Androscoggin River; Delorme Map 6:B-3), while another was spotted over Shore Road in Ogunquit on the 2nd. 13 AMERICAN COOTS continue in Grondin Pond, off of Clearwater Rd, in Scarborough (Delorme Map 3; B-4) as of 12/3. A tardy GREATER YELLOWLEGS was in Scarborough Marsh, opposite the Nature Center, on the 2nd. An immature POMARINE JAEGER passed by Cape Elizabeth’s Dyer Point on 12/4 (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on 12/4. A southbound – before landing on the water – DOVEKIE was spotted off of Dyer Point, along with one RAZORBILL on the 4th. Another RAZORBILL was noted from Ogunquit’s Marginal Way on the 2nd. The collection of tardy migrants, lingering half-hardies, and/or reverse migrants this week included: single NORTHERN FLICKERS at South Portland’s Bug Light Park (Delorme Map 73; E-4) on 12/1 and at Portland’s Dragon Field on 12/3, with 2 at Barrell Mill Pond in York on 12/4; a WINTER WREN at Saco’s Laurel Hill Cemetery on 12/4; one RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET at Scarborough Beach State Park on 12/3 and one at the end of Bay Bridge Rd in North Bath on the same day; five EASTERN BLUEBIRDS in a Scarborough yard on 11/30, with four continuing through 12/7 and 3 at Barrell Mill Pond in York on 12/2-12/7; one GRAY CATBIRD along Black Point Rd, where it crosses over the Libby River in Scarborough (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on 12/3; a BROWN THRASHER and a SAVANNAH SPARROW at Crescent Beach State Park in Cape Elizabeth on 12/4; and three BALTIMORE ORIOLES: a first-year female at a feeder near Biddeford Pool Beach on 12/5, one in a Brunswick yard on 12/6, and a female at a Harpswell feeder on 12/6. Three CAROLINA WRENS were noted this week: one again at Village Crossings in Cape Elizabeth (off of Scott Dyer Rd; Delorme Map 3: A-5), one continuing in a Scarborough yard, while one has returned to a Yarmouth yard as well. A late BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER visited a Windham yard’s suet feeder on the 2nd and 3rd, but the only other warbler report received this week was of a single YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER at Scarborough Beach State Park (Delorme Map 3: B-4) on the 3rd. AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS increased noticeably this week. 5 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were along the Eastern Road Trail through Scarborough Marsh on 12/3, with three at the end of Bay Bridge Rd in North Bath (Delorme Map 7: B-5) on the same day. A small flock of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS was heard at Florida Lake Park in Freeport (off of Rte 125; Delorme Map 6: C-1) on the 7th.
