This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: A coastal storm produced rain and NE winds on Thanksgiving. High pressure then dominated Fri. through Mon, with dry weather and more above-normal temps (high mostly in the mid to lo 50’s, normal= 44F). A weak cold front Mon. night - which produced some light rain - reduced temps (only in the upper 30’s for highs on Tues) with drizzle and light rain on gusty NE winds that persisted through Wed am. Milder air on SW followed a warm front on Thurs, producing a record high of 61F in Portland. It was a productive week of birding, either due to the mild weather – that got more birders out and about, and/or due to a more active weather pattern getting birds on the move. An **ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER** was discovered in Saco on 11/26. The bird was foraging on fruit and flycatching from a scrubby hillside under the powerline, as well as from riverside trees, in the area known to birders as the “Saco Yacht Club.” However, the Yacht Club (and a Public Boat Access) is actually across the street from the hillside. From downtown Saco, turn onto Front Street, bear right to proceed under the railroad tracks, and proceed to the boat launch parking lot (Delorme Map 71: B-3). The bird was seen through 3:35pm today, Thursday the 30th. It occasionally is seen behind the yacht club building, it can dissapear towards the water treatment plant, and it can remain hidden for long periods at a time, especially on cold and wet days. In other words, be patient, and search the entire area, especially near the large apple tree (with yellow fruit) behind the yellow building. This is only the 8th record of this species (plus four November “Myiarchus sp” reports) for Maine. Other species noted at the “Yacht Club” area this week included one YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER on 11/26 and 11/28, 1 CAROLINA WREN 11/28-29, and one RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET also on 11/28-29. A walk further east along the powerline cut on the 29th produced a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT (in shrubs located between two patched of evergreens, just after a sharp angle of the cut to the left), two more CAROLINA WRENS, and a tardy SWAMP SPARROW. The Thornhurst Farm, North Yarmouth (off of Rte 115; Delorme Map 5: D-5) CANADA GOOSE flock had grown to 574 birds as of 11/25. Single BRANT were at Biddeford Pool on 11/25, and in Portland Harbor (off of the SE end of the Eastern Promenade multipurpose trail) on 11/27. A single hen NORTHERN PINTAIL was at Freeport’s Winslow Park (Delorme Map 6: D-1) on the 25th. Meanwhile, 26 RUDDY DUCKS were in Prout’s Pond (behind “The Food Guy” restaurant, on Pleasant Hill Rd in Scarborough; Delorme Map 3: A-4) on the 27th. A male RING-NECKED PHEASANT was along Pine Point Rd in Scarborough on 11/27. A tardy TURKEY VULTURE was over the USM Campus in Gorham on the 28th. Single MERLINS were at Evergreen Cemetery on 11/25 and Portland’s Deering Oaks Park (Delorme Map 73: E-3) on 11/26, while a PEREGRINE FALCON was over the Fore River on the Portland/South Portland border on 11/20. 12 AMERICAN COOTS were in Grondin Pond (off of Clearwater Rd; Delorme Map 3: B-4) on 11/27. Lingering BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS included 3 at Biddeford Pool on the 26th, two there on the 27th, two at Pine Point in Scarborough on the 27th, and one at Laudholm Farms in Wells on the 30th. A WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER was noted at Popham Beach State Park in Phippsburg on the 28th. 13 PURPLE SANDPIPERS and a good local, inshore count of 51 DUNLIN were tallied at Winslow Park on the 25th, but Biddeford Pool outshined that: about 300 Purples were off of Ocean Ave on the 27th, while 264 Dunlin were tallied on the 28th. An ICELAND GULL was noted at the mouth of Goosefare Brook on the Old Orchard Beach/Saco border (Delorme Map 3: B-3) on 11/25. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER visited a River Rd, Topsham yard on 11/27, while single late NORTHERN FLICKERS were noted at Evergreen Cemetery on 11/22 and along Granite Point Rd in Biddeford (Delorme Map 3: D-3) on 11/26. NORTHERN SHRIKES were found along the entrance road to Brunswick High School on 11/26; Freeport’s Hedgehog Mountain Park (off Pownal Rd; Delorme Map 6: C-1) on 11/26; and at Scarborough’s Fuller Farm (off Broadturn Rd; Delorme Map 3: B-2) on 11/30. A TREE SWALLOW was spotted over the Eastern Rd Trail through Scarborough Marsh at sunset on the 26th. A tardy WINTER WREN was reported from Evergreen Cemetery on 11/22. A late RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET visited a Topsham yard on the 23rd. A lingering HERMIT THRUSH was near Head Beach in Phippsburg (Delorme Map 6: E-3) on 11/24. A very late male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER was found in the Biddeford Pool neighborhood on the 26th, along with two YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS. Meanwhile, a “YELLOW” PALM WARBLER was noted along Warren Avenue in Portland (Delorme Map 73: D-1) on the 27th. A single LAPLAND LONGSPUR was over Small Point in Phippsburg on 11/24.
