This is Derek Lovitch welcoming you to the Southcoastal Maine Rare Bird Alert, sponsored by the Wild Bird Center of Yarmouth at 500 Route One, Yarmouth, Maine. Weather Summary: Above normal temps continued all week. A slow-moving storm system produced periods of rain, drizzle, and fog Sun. through Tues., with mostly easterly winds. After a respite on Wed., rain, drizzle, and fog developed again Thurs., ahead of another approaching low, with gusty southerly winds developing. The persistent onshore flow and wet weather limited birders’ activity, and was certainly not conducive to producing – or allowing the detection of – rarities. Three MUTE SWANS continue at Legion’s Pond in Kittery (at the corner of Rte 103 and Paul St; Delorme Map 1: B-3), with a single drake WOOD DUCK being present as well on 11/12. The CANADA GOOSE flock at Thornhurst Farm in North Yarmouth (off of Rte 115; Delorme Map 5: D-5) was up to 482 individuals as of the 16th. 16+ RUDDY DUCKS were in Grondin Pond (off of Clearwater Dr; Delorme Map 3: B-5) and about 15 were in Prout’s Pond (behind “The Food Guy” restaurant on Pleasant Hill Rd; Delorme Map 3: A-4) in Scarborough on 11/15. Kittery’s Fort Foster hosted an AMERICAN BITTERN on the 12th. A MERLIN was frequenting Ferry Beach in Scarborough (Delorme Map 3: B-4) over the past weekend. 175+ AMERICAN COOT continue at the mouth of the Abagadasset River in Bowdoinham as of the 11/10. Meanwhile, in Scarborough on 11/15, 9 Coots were in Grondin Pond and 1 was in Prout’s Pond. A lone WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER was traveling and foraging with a flock of 13 SNOW BUNTINGS along Seapoint Beach in Kittery on the 12th. Meanwhile, a LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER was in the York River, along the pedestrian causeway just west of York Harbor (Delorme Map 1: B-5) on the 12th. An adult POMARINE JAEGER was spotted from Cape Elizabeth’s Dyer Point (Delorme Map 3: B-5) on 11/9, and a dark-morph adult passed by there on 11/13. Meanwhile, and adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was also spotted at Dyer Point on 11/9, with a late LAUGHING GULL passing on 11/13. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER visited a Wells yard on the 14th. A lingering EASTERN PHOEBE was in the neighborhood near The Nubble Light in Cape Neddick on the 12th. A CAROLINA WREN has been present in a Gorham yard since August, and it continues there this week, one continues at Kittery’s Fort Foster as well, but one in a Scarborough yard was last seen on 11/11. Getting late was a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET at Yarmouth’s Royal River Park (Delorme Map 5: D-5) on the 16th. Phippsburg’s Hermit Island (Delorme Map 6: E-4) hosted an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER on 11/11. It was seen on the northeast part of the peninsula, near the small marina. 3 AMERICAN PIPITS, 4 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, and 4 “IPSWICH” SAVANNAH SPARROWS were noted on Seapoint Beach in Kittery on the 12th. A tardy FIELD SPARROW was found at Portland’s Dragon Field (behind the Quarry Run Dogpark, at the intersection of Ocean and Presumpscot; Delorme Map 72: C-3) on 11/12.
